Saudi League Slams Ronaldo: 'You Are Not Bigger Than The League' Amid Al-Nassr Strike
)
The Saudi Pro League has formally addressed a recent protest by football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo concerning the division's transfer dealings and a perceived financial bias against his club, Al-Nassr. Ronaldo, aged 41, notably missed Al-Nassr's match against Al-Riyadh, a crucial encounter as his team aimed to close the gap on league leaders Al-Hilal. It was subsequently confirmed that his absence was not due to injury or fatigue, but rather a deliberate protest targeting the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), which holds controlling stakes in four prominent clubs: Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad, Al-Nassr, and Al-Ahli.
Reports indicate that Ronaldo's agitation was significantly triggered by Karim Benzema's transfer from Al-Ittihad to Al-Hilal. The former Manchester United star reportedly believes that the allocation of funds within the league is unfairly skewed, thereby impacting Al-Nassr's competitive standing. Following this period of protest, Ronaldo has since returned to training, sharing a picture of himself on the Al-Nassr training ground on Wednesday. However, his participation in the upcoming match against Al-Ittihad on Friday remains uncertain.
In direct response to Ronaldo's public stance, the Saudi Pro League issued a comprehensive statement. The league firmly asserted that all clubs owned by the PIF operate with independence and adhere to a fair and consistent financial framework. The statement directly acknowledged Ronaldo's protest, confirming the widespread reports, and made it unequivocally clear that no individual, regardless of their significance, holds authority over the transfer dealings or strategic decisions of clubs beyond their own.
According to the BBC, the league's statement articulated its foundational principle: "The Saudi Pro League is structured around a simple principle: every club operates independently under the same rules. Clubs have their own boards, their own executives and their own football leadership. Decisions on recruitment, spending and strategy sit with those clubs, within a financial framework designed to ensure sustainability and competitive balance. That framework applies equally across the league." This emphasizes the principle of autonomous club management within a regulated financial ecosystem.
The communique further recognized Ronaldo's dedicated involvement with Al-Nassr since his arrival, acknowledging his pivotal role in the club's growth and ambition, as well as his natural desire to win as an elite competitor. However, it reiterated the league's stance: "But no individual - however significant - determines decisions beyond their own club." The statement also cited recent transfer activities as clear evidence of this independence, noting that one club pursued a particular strengthening strategy while another opted for a different approach, all within approved financial parameters.
Concluding its statement, the Saudi Pro League highlighted the intense competitiveness of the current season, with only a few points separating the top four teams, demonstrating a vibrant title race. This level of balance was presented as proof that the league's system is effectively achieving its intended goals. The league emphasized that its primary focus remains squarely on the football itself – "on the pitch, where it belongs – and on maintaining a credible, competitive competition for players and fans."
