Royal Family Drama: King Charles Stops Prince Andrew's Costly Request!

King Charles III has ushered in a new era of financial discipline within the Royal Household, adopting a business-like approach to expenditure and family patronage. This shift became evident when the King swiftly rejected a ‘bizarre’ £32,000 request from his brother, Andrew Windsor, for spiritual Indian gurus to treat him at home. While the late Queen Elizabeth II had previously approved similar requests, King Charles was reportedly “horrified” and refused to allocate royal funds for such a proposal, signaling a clear departure from past practices.
According to royal biographer Robert Jobson, in his book The Windsor Legacy: A Royal Dynasty, the King’s refusal underscores his commitment to “value for money and efficiency,” rather than mere financial cuts. This philosophy forms part of a broader effort to reshape the monarchy, streamline operations, and reduce the number of royals financially reliant on the King’s patronage. A senior insider emphasized this new stance, stating, “The King isn’t running a housing association for distant relatives.”
The King’s actions also reflect a concerted effort to distance the monarchy from controversial associations, particularly with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, to whom Andrew Windsor was linked. On November 6, King Charles officially stripped Andrew of his princely title and HRH style, following continued allegations of assault by Virginia Giuffre, who was trafficked by Epstein. Andrew has consistently denied these claims.
Andrew Windsor is not the only royal to experience the effects of the King’s tightened financial reins. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were evicted from Frogmore Cottage, a property gifted to them by the late Queen as a wedding present. This move, announced shortly after the publication of Prince Harry’s memoir Spare, sent a clear message across the monarchy: “No freeloaders in the modern monarchy.”
Further demonstrating this commitment, the King has instructed his aides to prioritize “smarter use of resources,” reining in spending from both the Duchy of Lancaster and the Sovereign Grant. Charles’s main objective is to direct funds toward strengthening the institution, which includes ensuring competitive pay and pensions to retain efficient staff. This initiative has already led to staff cutbacks, with “value for money” becoming the prevailing buzz phrase within the household.
The tangible results of King Charles’s efforts to slim down the monarchy are evident in significant cost savings to the public purse exceeding £20 million. In the fiscal year 2023–24, the overall net expenditure funded by the Sovereign Grant decreased by 17 percent to £89.1 million, compared to a record high of over £107 million the previous year. This trend continued into the 2024–25 financial year, with expenditure falling by another 4 percent to £85.2 million, representing a £3.9 million reduction from the previous year.
Through these decisive measures, King Charles III is redefining royal responsibility, anchoring the monarchy in transparency, accountability, and fiscal restraint fit for the modern era.
