Rivian's Game-Changing 2027 R2 SUV Breaks Cover: Pricing, Performance, and Standout Innovations Revealed!

The 2027 Rivian R2 is positioned as a pivotal vehicle for the company's future viability, building upon the established success of its predecessors, the R1T electric truck and R1S SUV. Described as 'annoyingly good' after initial drives, the R2 embodies Rivian's proven formula: a product of passionate teams creating stylish, thoughtfully designed vehicles that are enjoyable to drive both on and off-road, and continuously enhanced by sophisticated software. These core traits, defining what makes a Rivian a Rivian, are fully integrated into this smaller, more accessible model.

Crucial to Rivian's bottom line, the R2 is an all-electric midsize SUV expected to be a high-volume seller, contrasting with the initial, pricier R1 models. It also serves as a significant technology showcase, incorporating Rivian's latest innovations, some exclusive to the R2, while others will be shared with the R1 lineup. The R2 aims to offer a real choice in the evolving EV marketplace and is benchmarked against a diverse array of bestsellers including the Tesla Model Y, Toyota RAV4, Subaru Outback, luxury sport models like the BMW X3, and hardcore off-roaders such as the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco.

Rivian plans to offer three primary variations of the R2 in its first year: the R2 Standard, R2 Premium, and R2 Performance. Customization options will generally be limited to colors, wheels, and software packages for each trim.

The most capable variant available at launch is the 2027 Rivian R2 Performance, featuring an impressive 656 hp and 609 lb-ft of torque. It comes equipped with a semi-active electronically adaptive suspension and unique off-road drive modes. While offering 330 miles of range, opting for available all-terrain tires will adjust this to 307 miles. Early R2 Performance models will be offered with a Launch package, priced at $59,485, which includes Rivian’s Autonomy+ driver assist system, a tow hitch, and a physical key fob. Customer deliveries for this Launch package are set to commence in June 2026.

The entry-level 2027 Rivian R2 Standard starts at $46,235, including destination and delivery fees. This single-motor, rear-drive model delivers 350 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque, achieving an estimated 0–60 mph in 5.9 seconds. Its Rivian-estimated range is 275 miles per charge.

A notable distinction exists between the R2 Standard and the pricier R2 Standard Long Range ($49,985), primarily concerning their batteries. While the R2 Standard Long Range, R2 Premium, and R2 Performance models are confirmed to use an 87.9 kWh battery with NCMA (Nickel Manganese Cobalt Aluminum) chemistry, the R2 Standard's battery capacity remains unconfirmed. It is widely suspected that the R2 Standard will employ an LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) chemistry battery, a more cost-effective solution commonly used in Rivian's R1
