Rivers on Edge: Governor Fubara Breaks Silence Amidst Impeachment Storm

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, are once again facing impeachment threats from the Rivers State House of Assembly, amid a deepening political rift linked to the ongoing fallout between the governor and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
The political dynamics in Rivers State have shifted significantly in recent months, particularly following Governor Fubara’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The governor attributed the move to the support he received from President Bola Tinubu during the state’s political crisis. His defection came shortly after 15 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, including Speaker Martin Amaewhule, also joined the APC in December, making Fubara the first APC governor in Rivers State since 1999.
Amid these developments, Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor and an APC aspirant for the 2027 Lagos governorship election, has dismissed fears surrounding the impeachment moves, insisting that Governor Fubara remains politically secure within the APC. Speaking after participating in the APC e-registration exercise in Lagos, Jandor expressed confidence that President Tinubu, as the leader of the party and the country, would step in to resolve the situation.
Jandor noted that the APC possesses a strong internal leadership structure capable of managing disputes of this nature, a mechanism he argued is lacking within the PDP, which he claimed has since fallen into political irrelevance.
Reiterating his position, Jandor stated that once the party leadership, under President Tinubu, issues clear direction, party members would align accordingly. He recalled that he had initially been worried about Governor Fubara when the impeachment notice was first issued while the governor was still a member of the PDP. However, he said his perspective has since changed, describing the Rivers political crisis as an internal party matter that can be resolved through dialogue and decisive leadership, rather than a development capable of destabilising the governor’s position.
