Rivers in Turmoil: Fubara's Impeachment Process Accelerates Amid Political Chaos

The Rivers State House of Assembly has affirmed that impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, are actively in progress. This statement comes amidst circulating rumors on social media suggesting that the process had been halted or discontinued, which the Assembly has categorically denied.
Led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, the House initiated the impeachment process on a Thursday, leveling eight allegations of gross misconduct against the Governor and his deputy. Dr. Enemi Alabo George, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, clarified the Assembly's position in a statement released on Friday.
Dr. George confirmed that the impeachment process, which commenced on January 8th, is proceeding in full compliance with the relevant provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). He further stated that notices of allegations of gross misconduct, brought pursuant to Section 188 of the Constitution, have been officially forwarded to the Governor and Deputy, and their responses are currently awaited.
Emphasizing the constitutional role of the House of Assembly, Dr. George reiterated its empowerment to safeguard the people and prevent constitutional infractions by the Governor, Deputy Governor, or any other state officer. He affirmed the Assembly's commitment to its constitutional duties, stating that members remain duty-bound in this regard.
The House is aware of efforts by certain individuals and media platforms to spread misinformation and false narratives aimed at causing disaffection between the Assembly and the public. Dr. George urged all citizens to disregard such antics, asserting that these actions have already failed.
The statement concluded with an expression of gratitude to the people of Rivers State for their prayers and encouragement, and to all stakeholders and leaders who believe in the Nigerian democratic project. The Assembly reiterated its resolve not to be deterred by cheap blackmail or threats from those who do not have the best interests of the nation's nascent democracy at heart.
