Rangers Snatch NPFL Crown in Lagos After Epic Winner-Takes-All Battle
Enugu Rangers emerged champions of the 2025/26Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season after securing a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City in Lagos on the final day of the campaign.
The Flying Antelopes held their nerve in a tense title race to finish top of the league table with 68 points, edging Rivers United by a single point to reclaim the domestic crown in thrilling fashion.
The NPFL had meticulously prepared for every eventuality, including deploying two trophies to both potential championship venues to ensure a seamless coronation.
Enugu Rangers, known as the Flying Antelopes, boasted the league’s best defensive record, having conceded only 25 goals all season.
To secure a record-equalling ninth NPFL crown, they needed a victory in Lagos against Ikorodu City, a team that had been the season’s surprise package and remained unbeaten at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, while also chasing a CAF Confederation Cup berth.
Meanwhile, Rivers United faced Katsina United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, needing a win and hoping for a Rangers slip-up.
The Pride of Rivers had maintained an unbeaten home record since October 2025. All Matchday 38 fixtures kicked off simultaneously at 4:00 p.m. to preserve the integrity of the competition.
On the final day, Enugu Rangers emerged champions after a tense 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City in Lagos. Knowing that only a win would guarantee the title regardless of other results, Rangers displayed remarkable composure.
Midfielder Chidiebere Nwobodo proved to be the hero, opening the scoring in the 30th minute to give Rangers a crucial lead before half-time.
He then doubled Rangers’ advantage shortly after the restart in the 52nd minute, placing the Enugu side firmly in control and within touching distance of the championship.
Ikorodu City, however, refused to surrender. Ali Moses pulled one back for the hosts in the 58th minute, setting up a nervy finale as Rangers faced sustained pressure.
Despite late attacks and growing tension, Rangers maintained their composure and defended resolutely to preserve their slender advantage and seal a famous triumph.
This victory capped a remarkable campaign for Rangers, whose consistency and resilience proved decisive in one of the closest title races in recent NPFL history. They finished atop the league table with 68 points.
Elsewhere in Port Harcourt, Rivers United secured a 3-0 victory over Katsina United, doing everything they could to keep their title hopes alive.
However, Rangers’ win in Lagos extinguished their dreams of league glory. Coach Finidi George’s side finished second with 67 points, just one behind Rangers, and had to settle for a CAF Champions League qualification slot as consolation.
Beyond the title race, the final day also featured intense battles for continental qualification and relegation survival.
While former champions Bayelsa United and Wikki Tourists had already been relegated, several traditional powerhouses like defending champions Remo Stars, nine-time champions Enyimba, Kano Pillars, Warri Wolves, and Plateau United were all battling to avoid the drop zone.
The race for CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup spots added another layer of tension, with teams like Shooting Stars pushing for a top-three finish and Ikorodu City's continental hopes hanging in the balance.
The NPFL Golden Boot race also remained fiercely contested. Rangers’ Godwin Obaje led the scoring chart with 14 goals, closely pursued by Remo Stars captain Victor Mbaoma, Ikorodu City sensation Joseph Arumala, and Wikki Tourists striker Jonathan Mairiga, all within striking distance.
The final day truly delivered unmissable drama, raw emotion, and a fitting climax to an unforgettable NPFL season.
