Producer Unveils 'Entire Universes' for Characters in 'Margo's Got Money Troubles' Season 2

The Apple TV series, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, based on Rufi Thorpe’s beloved novel, has captivated audiences by seamlessly blending comedy and drama, delivering a narrative that is both sharply written and enhanced by excellent performances from its stellar cast. Collider recently sat down with producer Eva Anderson, known for her diverse work across genres from dark comedies to thrillers and docudramas, to delve into the show's creative adaptations, behind-the-scenes insights, and the exciting prospects for its newly confirmed second season.
The series revolves around Margo (Elle Fanning), a college student who navigates the complexities of an unexpected pregnancy with her professor's baby. Against the dismay of her mother, Shyanne (Michelle Pfeiffer), who is dating a religious man named Kenny (Greg Kinnear), Margo chooses to keep the child. Her journey as a young single mother is fraught with challenges, yet she discovers surprising support from her former pro-wrestler father, Jinx (Nick Offerman), her roommate Susie (Thaddea Graham), and an unexpectedly lucrative career creating sketches for OnlyFans.
Anderson detailed the significant creative liberties taken during the adaptation from book to screen. One notable change concerns JB, a substantial character in the novel, who is only briefly mentioned in the series finale. This decision was intentional; the production team aimed to avoid placing Margo in a romantic relationship while she grappled with immense personal, familial, and legal challenges, preserving her focus on protecting her child. Anderson hinted that JB’s story is not necessarily over, suggesting he may return in future installments.
Another pivotal divergence from the book involves Shyanne’s character. In the novel, Shyanne is complicit with Kenny’s decision to call Child Protective Services (CPS). However, the series portrays her as blindsided by Kenny’s actions. Anderson explained that casting Michelle Pfeiffer as Shyanne profoundly influenced this change. The intense, loving, yet combative dynamic between Pfeiffer and Fanning—who have known each other since Fanning was three—made the show's creators believe that this version of Shyanne, who understands the severe consequences of involving CPS, could never betray Margo in such a manner. Instead, Kenny, from a different world and believing in the protective nature of systems, was depicted as solely responsible for the call, unaware of the potential devastation it could cause.
With a second season officially confirmed, Anderson offered glimpses into potential future plotlines. Fans can anticipate more of Jinx’s involvement in the wrestling world, possibly expanding his role beyond a wrestler to a manager, as depicted in the book. The evolving relationship between Shyanne and Kenny, Margo’s continued journey with her growing baby, and her next career moves are also fertile ground for new stories. Anderson emphasized the boundless possibilities inherent in such richly developed characters and an exceptional cast.
The casting process itself presented unique challenges, particularly for the roles of KC and Rose. Anderson revealed that the team undertook an extensive search beyond traditional acting circles, seeking individuals with a truly unique energy. Their efforts paid off with the discovery of Lindsey Normington, an actress and dancer from Anora, and musician Rico Nasty, whose immediate rapport on camera confirmed they were the perfect choices.
The show's distinctive musical identity, deeply influenced by executive producer David E. Kelley’s known affinity for iconic soundtracks, was also a topic of discussion. Anderson cited Dire Straits’ “Walk of Life,” played during Margo’s baby shower and pregnancy in the pilot, as her favorite
