NDPC Launches Investigation into Temu Over Alleged Data Misuse in Nigeria

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has opened a probe into Temu, scrutinizing its handling of personal data for over 12.7 million Nigerian users amid concerns over potential breaches of local privacy laws.
Temu, a Chinese e-commerce platform with 70 million daily global users, has seen rapid growth in Nigeria, prompting regulators to question if this expansion compromises compliance and adherence to the Data Protection Act.
The investigation focuses on data collection practices, transparency in usage, and cross-border transfers, assessing whether Temu exceeds the principle of data minimisation by collecting more information than necessary.
NDPC will also examine the platform’s accountability measures, ensuring robust protection systems are in place to safeguard user data and uphold privacy responsibilities for nearly 13 million Nigerians.
Local partners, including delivery and payment companies facilitating Temu’s operations, are warned that they may also face scrutiny if found aiding platforms that fail to meet regulatory standards and privacy requirements.
Temu has yet to respond publicly, and the NDPC has not specified a timeline for the probe or potential penalties if violations are confirmed, highlighting the seriousness of compliance expectations.
