Presidential Decree: Tinubu Renames Federal University in Bauchi After Late Sheikh Dahiru

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially approved the renaming of the Federal University of Medical Sciences, Azare, Bauchi State, to Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi University. This decision was announced on Saturday during the President's condolence visit to the family of the late revered Islamic scholar in Bauchi State. The renaming serves as a profound effort to preserve and immortalize the extensive legacy and invaluable contributions of Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi to education, religious scholarship, humility, and service to humanity.
President Tinubu arrived in Bauchi at approximately 4:10 p.m. at the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport, where he was honored with a Guard of Honour by the Nigerian Air Force. He was accompanied by notable officials including Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, the Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and his son, Seyi Tinubu. The presidential delegation was received by Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar, and Senator Shehu Buba representing Bauchi South.
During his visit to the late Sheikh Dahiru's mosque, President Tinubu described the cleric's passing as a "great national loss." He lauded Sheikh Dahiru for his lifelong dedication to spreading knowledge, promoting good character, and serving as a "Nigerian conscience" who worked tirelessly on the path of Almighty Allah, preaching sermons, knowledge, and the values of honesty and great character. Tinubu emphasized that the renaming of the university was a direct recognition of the scholar's significant impact on shaping generations through his teachings, which stressed moral discipline, tolerance, and adherence to Islamic principles, thereby fostering peaceful coexistence across the country. The President prayed for Allah’s mercy upon the soul of the late scholar, asking that he be granted Jannatul Firdaus, and sought strength for his family, the Bauchi State Government, and the people of the state to bear the immense loss. He also urged Nigerians to continue praying for peace and unity in the nation, underscoring the importance of collective resilience.
Governor Bala Mohammed, who welcomed the presidential delegation, expressed his profound appreciation to President Tinubu for honoring the late cleric and Bauchi State through the visit and the renaming of the institution. Responding on behalf of the bereaved family, Sheikh Ibrahim Dahiru Usman Bauchi, the eldest son, conveyed deep gratitude to President Tinubu for his visit, prayers, and the decision to immortalize their father. Dr. Bashir Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi also thanked the President for sending a high-powered delegation to the funeral and for his personal visit to console the family. Governor Mohammed reiterated his thanks to the President for his love and affinity shown towards the late Sheikh and the people of Bauchi State.
Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, the revered spiritual leader of the Tijjaniyya Brotherhood in Nigeria, passed away on November 27 at the age of 98 and was laid to rest on November 28 in accordance with Islamic rites. Born in 1927 in Gombe State, Sheikh Dahiru devoted his life to the advancement of Islamic education, the promotion of peaceful coexistence, and the fostering of unity throughout Nigeria. His teachings, which earned him a large and deeply respectful following both within and beyond Nigeria, played a significant role in community development, the mentorship of young scholars, and the strengthening of religious understanding. President Tinubu is expected to proceed to Lagos after the condolence visit to spend the end-of-year holidays.
