Presidential Boost: Tinubu Approves N15bn for New Police Academy Campus in Ogun

President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus for the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, located within the Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State. This significant development is further supported by an approved special take-off grant of N15 billion for the college. This crucial intervention fund will be sourced from the TetFund 2026 allocation, earmarked to finance essential infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and core training assets, thereby ensuring a robust foundation for the new institution.

This presidential approval directly fulfills the provisions outlined in the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021. The Act mandates the expansion of the existing Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State, into multiple campuses across the nation, thereby broadening its reach and capacity. The decision to site the new campus in Erinja was a recommendation from a high-level consultative meeting. This meeting included key stakeholders such as the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Geidam; the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa; officials from the Federal Ministry of Education; the Inspector-General of Police (IGP); and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC). Their deliberations carefully considered critical factors including student intake capacity, funding realities, academic quality assurance, and the long-term strategic needs of the Nigerian Police Force, which is actively engaged in recruiting more personnel. President Tinubu firmly believes that this strategic expansion will significantly enhance institutional governance, promote modern policing education, and ultimately strengthen national security. The Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), Bayo Onanuga, formally announced these approvals.

In addition to establishing the new campus, President Tinubu also approved the reconstitution of the 16-member governing council for the Nigeria Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State. The Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Geidam, has been appointed as the chairman of this influential council. Other distinguished members include the chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), and one representative each from the Federal Ministry of Education, the Federal Ministry of Finance, and the Federal Ministry of Justice. To ensure broad national representation, six individuals have been appointed to represent Nigeria's six geopolitical zones: Babagana Zannah Adam (DCP rtd.) for the North-east, Emmanuel Torkuma Manger for the North-central, Maigari Abati Dikko (DIG rtd.) for the North-west, Dubem A. Obaze (KSM) for the South-east, Ajibogere Toyin for the South-west, and Udom Udo Ekpoudom (DIG Rtd.) for the South-south. The Commandant of the Academy, the Provost, and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of training will serve as ex-officio members, with the Registrar of the Academy undertaking the duties of the council's secretary.
