Political Showdown: Ibadan Ignites As PDP National Convention Kicks Off Amidst Makinde Presidential Buzz

The political landscape in Nigeria is currently focused on Ibadan, Oyo State, as the ancient city prepares to host the much-anticipated 2025 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention. Scheduled for November 15 and 16, this elective convention is set to bring together delegates, governors, and stakeholders from across the nation, with extensive banners already adorning the Adamasingba Stadium, the venue for the event. The city has expressed its readiness to host the "historic" convention, signaling its significant role as the political heartbeat of Southwestern Nigeria.
A major force behind the convention's momentum is the Northern Youth Network (NYN), which has announced its plan to mobilize hundreds of young people from the 19 Northern states. This mobilization is a clear demonstration of solidarity and political consciousness among Nigerian youth, aiming to support the rebuilding of the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections. The NYN, led by National Coordinator Comrade Sulaiman Yakubu from Bauchi State, has also openly expressed a vote of confidence in the leadership of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, describing him as a "symbol of competence, transparency, and modern leadership." The group lauded Makinde's administration for its remarkable achievements in infrastructure development, fiscal prudence, and youth empowerment within Oyo State.
The NYN's advocacy extends to emphasizing the critical need for a strong opposition to ensure democracy thrives in Nigeria, strongly opposing the emergence of a one-party state. They highlighted the PDP as the only party in the country that has maintained its name since Nigeria's return to democracy in 1999, asserting its position as the sole viable opposition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election. The network also expressed concern over politicians who previously benefited from the PDP platform but are now intent on destroying the party for selfish interests. Their support for Governor Makinde and other party leaders is rooted in this struggle to rebuild the PDP through the National Convention.
Governor Seyi Makinde's profile at the convention has been further elevated by the appearance of numerous banners promoting his candidacy for the 2027 presidency. Groups like "Lana Fun Seyi" and individuals such as Fapetu Stephen from Ido LGA in Oyo state have prominently displayed messages like "Seyi Makinde for President" and "Relax, Seyi Makinde will fix Nigeria 2027" at the convention venue. While Makinde himself stated in 2024 that he would declare his presidential ambition when ready, these public displays underscore growing speculation about his political future. The NYN's planned presence also signifies loyalty to the ideals of Hon. Shina Abiola Peller, a PDP member and advocate for youth inclusion, and confidence in Governor Makinde's national leadership capacity.
Beyond Makinde, campaign materials for other aspirants have also been spotted, including those for Kabiru Turaki, a former minister seeking the national chairman position, and Taofeek Arapaja, a former deputy national chairman vying for national secretary. These banners and posters contribute to a broader display by various support groups and state chapters, all converging ahead of the two-day event which aims to produce a new set of officers for the PDP National Working Committee (NWC).
The convention, however, is not without its controversies. Conflicting judicial pronouncements have clouded its legality. An Oyo high court previously ordered the PDP and its acting national chairman, Umar Damagum, to proceed with convention preparations. However, an Abuja high court subsequently issued an order halting the event and instructing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to supervise or recognize its outcome. Further adding to the confusion, a faction within the party, led by Sam Anyanwu, announced a postponement of the convention, a claim quickly refuted by the Damagum-led faction, affirming the convention's scheduled dates.
Amidst these challenges, the Northern Youth Network maintains its commitment to promoting national unity, inter-regional collaboration, and issue-based politics. They believe Nigeria's future hinges on leaders who comprehend both effective governance and the aspirations of its youthful population. The NYN has urged other youth groups nationwide to overcome political apathy and actively engage in shaping the country’s democratic trajectory, also cautioning the judiciary against conflicting judgments that could foster confusion and undermine democracy.
