Political Heavyweights Clash: APC & NNPP Square Off Over Governance

A significant political disagreement has emerged in Ebonyi State, pitting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) against the opposition New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). The contention centers on allegations of failed promises, instances of bad governance, and vastly different perspectives on the potential for Nigerian voters to remove the incumbent party in the upcoming 2027 general election. This political dispute highlights the growing friction and strategic positioning of parties ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The initial challenge came from Mr. Ojeogu Ifeanyi, the state chairman of the NNPP. Speaking in Abakaliki during a crucial meeting that included the party’s council chairmen and the State Working Committee, Ifeanyi unequivocally declared his party’s strong determination and commitment to unseating Governor Francis Nwifuru. He expressed profound disappointment, asserting that the ruling APC has collectively failed the Nigerian populace. Ifeanyi elaborated on the prevailing conditions across the nation, citing widespread hunger, pervasive poverty, systemic maladministration, the harassment of opposition parties, significant infrastructural decay, a general state of underdevelopment, and a palpable sense of anger among citizens.
Emphasizing the strategic objective of the meeting, Ifeanyi stated, “The essence of our meeting is to strategise on how to take over Ebonyi State government house come 2027. The party has resolved and marshall out plans on how to unseat Governor Francis Nwifuru.” In a direct appeal to the electorate, he urged all residents of Ebonyi State to proactively obtain their voter cards and prepare to cast their votes for the NNPP gubernatorial candidate in the 2027 elections, signaling a clear intent to mobilize grassroots support.
In a rapid and robust counter-response, the ruling APC in Ebonyi State vehemently dismissed the NNPP’s declarations. The party characterized these statements as not only false and mischievous but also a calculated attempt designed to undermine the many laudable achievements and positive impacts of the current administration within the state. Through a statement issued by Mr. Ogbuatu Simbad, the state publicity secretary, the APC firmly stated that the NNPP’s assertions—that Governor Nwifuru has failed and that 2027 would mark the end of APC leadership in Ebonyi—were nothing more than a figment of its wild imagination and an instance of propaganda taken excessively far.
Simbad further underscored the APC’s stance, remarking, “Ordinarily, such empty talk does not deserve a response because the NNPP has no recognisable structure, presence, or followers in Ebonyi State.” He staunchly defended Governor Nwifuru's tenure, maintaining that since assuming office, the Governor has consistently provided purposeful and people-centered leadership to the citizens of the state. Simbad highlighted specific areas of progress, affirming that Governor Nwifuru has delivered good governance and inclusive leadership, significantly improved the welfare of civil servants, and bolstered healthcare delivery by ensuring that state hospitals and health centers across communities are fully functional.
The APC challenged Mr. Ojeogu Ifeanyi to substantiate his claims by pointing out even a single area where Governor Nwifuru has purportedly failed the people of Ebonyi. The party concluded by suggesting that the NNPP Chairman’s pronouncements reflected "mere wishful thinking and daydreams of unseating a widely accepted government." Finally, the APC appealed to the people of Ebonyi State to disregard the NNPP’s statement entirely and instead continue their unwavering support for the administration of Governor Nwifuru, thereby ensuring the continuation of developmental strides across the state.
