Political Earthquake: Obi & Kwankwaso Officially Join NDC Ahead of Crucial 2027 Elections!

Prominent Nigerian political figures, Peter Obi, a former Labour Party presidential candidate and Anambra State governor, and Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, a former New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) counterpart and Kano State governor, have formally joined or are in the final stages of joining the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). This significant political realignment follows Obi's earlier resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) due to persistent internal crises and legal challenges, with both leaders positioning themselves for the 2027 presidential election, potentially seeking a joint ticket.
The primary motivation behind their move is to secure a stable and credible platform, free from the political and legal obstacles that have plagued some existing parties. The NDC is seen as an opportune avenue to reposition themselves and other key opposition figures for effective participation in the next electoral cycle. The lingering leadership dispute within the ADC, which was recently remitted to lower courts by the Supreme Court, has left the party in a precarious position, further emphasizing the need for a new, robust platform ahead of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s May 10 deadline for submitting membership registers.
The political heavyweights were officially received at the NDC headquarters in Abuja by the party’s National Leader, former Bayelsa State Governor Henry Seriake Dickson, and its National Chairman, Moses Cleopas. They were accompanied by several stakeholders, including Anambra Central Senator Victor Umeh. Upon receiving his NDC membership card, Obi reportedly declared their purpose: “we are here to build Nigeria,” signaling a strong commitment to national development through their new political home.
Despite some initial conflicting reports, the Kwankwasiyya Movement’s spokesman, Dr. Habib Mohammed, confirmed that Kwankwaso had concluded arrangements to defect to the NDC. This confirmation came even as Kwankwaso himself initially stated he was still in talks with various parties, including NDC and PRP, and had not made a final decision. Mohammed clarified that the strategic move aimed at repositioning Kwankwaso and other opposition actors for the 2027 general elections, driven by concerns over potential legal traps and internal party instability.
The urgency of these realignments is underscored by the impending INEC deadline and the protracted legal issues facing the ADC. Dr. Tanko Yunusa, Obi’s spokesman and National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, expressed significant worry over the tight timeline for resolving the ADC’s leadership dispute, highlighting the critical need for opposition figures to secure a viable political home swiftly. The consolidation of the 'Obidient Movement' and 'Kwankwasiyya Movement' is seen as a concerted effort to form a formidable coalition and pursue a joint 'Obi-Kwankwaso OK' presidential ticket to
