Political Earthquake: Iyabo Obasanjo Slams APC, Cites 'Broken Trust' for Resignation
Iyabo Obasanjo, former senator for Ogun Central, resigned from the APC over unfulfilled promises by the party's consensus governorship candidate in Ogun State. She cited disrespect and exclusion after losing the governorship ticket. Her recent move to the PDP is set to reshape the political landscape for the 2027 Ogun State governorship election.
Former senator representing Ogun Central, Iyabo Obasanjo, recently detailed the reasons behind her resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC). Her decision stemmed from significant disappointment over unfulfilled promises made by the party’s consensus governorship candidate in Ogun State. Speaking on The Morayo Show, Iyabo Obasanjo expressed her inability to remain part of a political platform where commitments to her and her supporters were not honored. She explicitly stated, "I resigned from the APC because I was upset that the consensus candidate failed to keep the promises he made to me and my followers."
Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, had made a return to active politics in January 2026 after an almost 15-year hiatus. She had declared her intention to contest the Ogun State governorship election under the APC platform. However, her political engagement with the ruling party proved to be brief. She officially resigned from the APC on May 31, 2026, following her failure to secure the governorship ticket. Her resignation letter cited allegations of disrespect, exclusion, and unfair treatment by the party leadership as contributing factors.
A major point of contention for Iyabo Obasanjo was the consensus arrangement that ultimately led to Senator Solomon Adeola, widely known as Yayi, becoming the APC governorship candidate for the upcoming 2027 election in Ogun State. While she had initially agreed to abide by any consensus decision made by the party, she asserted that she was neither consulted nor actively involved in the process that facilitated Adeola’s emergence. Furthermore, she alleged that several of her supporters were denied access to the venue where the consensus candidate was unveiled to the public.
According to Iyabo Obasanjo, Senator Adeola subsequently met with her supporters and provided assurances that he would address various concerns raised by her camp within a week. However, these assurances were reportedly not fulfilled. In a recent development, the former senator has now joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This strategic move is expected to introduce new dynamics and significantly impact the political calculations leading up to the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
