Lusaka on Edge: Militia Plot to Overthrow Government Foiled, Opposition Links Probed
Zambian security forces conducted a major operation in Lusaka's Kabulonga on August 13, 2026, arresting suspected militia members and other individuals linked to alleged military plans and illegal training camps. The raid, confirmed by Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa, resulted in the seizure of high-grade weapons and an exchange of gunfire, with NRPUP presidential candidate Brian Mundubile reportedly present at the scene.
A significant joint security operation was conducted in Lusaka’s Kabulonga area on August 13, 2026, leading to the apprehension of several suspected militia members and other persons of interest. The operation, executed by various security agencies, was based on intelligence gathered over several years, with intensified surveillance in recent months, concerning a group allegedly posing a serious threat to national security.
Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa confirmed the arrests, stating that the action was taken after security agencies acquired information raising serious concerns about the individuals' activities. Mr. Kangwa revealed that some of the persons under surveillance were allegedly connected to military plans involving foreign nationals and illegal military training camps, which were deemed a grave danger to the state's security and constitutional order.
During the operation, conducted at a premises in Kabulonga, security forces recovered high-grade military weapons, ammunition, and other materials believed to be intended for use in an armed insurrection. Mr. Kangwa also reported that the occupants of the premises fired shots at law enforcement officers during the raid, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. While several arrests were made, some individuals reportedly fled the scene and remain at large.
Among those apprehended were George Chisanga, Bishop Trevor Mwamba, Simon Phiri, Richard Banda, Francis Mulenga, and Patrick Mwansa. These individuals are currently held in lawful custody at various police stations across Lusaka, have been charged, and will be granted access to their families and legal counsel. Secretary Kangwa further confirmed that senior members of political parties were present at the premises, and notably, the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) presidential candidate, Brian Mundubile, was also found at the scene. This statement clarifies earlier government denials by the Ministry of Information Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana and Defence Permanent Secretary Maambo Haamaundu regarding reports of a military raid and gunfire at Mr. Mundubile’s residence.
Investigations into the full extent of the alleged activities and the network involved are ongoing. Mr. Kangwa assured the public of the security agencies' continued vigilance and commitment to protecting Zambia's peace and security, urging citizens to remain calm and rely on verified information as the situation develops. The arrests come at a particularly sensitive period, coinciding with heightened political tensions surrounding the upcoming 2026 general elections.
