Political Bombshell: Amaechi Teams Up with Atiku for 2027 ADC Presidential Bid

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially announced the selection of former Rivers State Governor and immediate past Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to its presidential candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, for the 2027 general election. This significant decision was disclosed by the party's National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, in a statement issued from Abuja, following extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, and representatives from across all geopolitical zones.

The ADC emphasized that the choice of Amaechi was heavily influenced by his strong performance in the party's presidential primary election, where he emerged as the runner-up, as well as his distinguished public service record. The party stated that the proposed partnership between Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi transcends a mere political alliance, representing the convergence of two seasoned statesmen who possess the requisite experience, national reach, and leadership capacity to address Nigeria's current challenges and usher the country into a new era of prosperity, security, and inclusive development.

Rotimi Amaechi brings to the ticket a wealth of experience spanning both the legislative and executive arms of government. His career includes serving as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, a two-term Governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015, and as Minister of Transportation from 2015 to 2023. The ADC highlighted that few political leaders in Nigeria today boast such extensive and balanced experience, which is deemed invaluable for supporting the incoming ADC administration from day one. His political influence across the South-South and other Southern regions, coupled with his ability to forge coalitions across various political and regional divides, is expected to complement Atiku Abubakar's candidacy effectively.

Atiku Abubakar, who served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007 and has contested several presidential elections, leads this national ticket designed to bridge regions, generations, and political traditions. Together, the Atiku-Amaechi ticket aims to present a strong national option ahead of the 2027 election, sending a clear message to millions of Nigerians who are demanding leadership, economic revival, job creation, security, and national unity.

Initially, Amaechi had rejected the outcome of the ADC presidential primary election, and some party members had raised concerns about alleged manipulations in the process that favored Atiku. Prior to the primary, Amaechi had publicly stated he did not purchase the nomination form with the intention of becoming a vice-presidential candidate. However, following the primary, talks between the two politicians resumed as concerted efforts were made to unite party members ahead of the general election. The immediate past chairman of the ADC in Rivers State, Sampson Leader, later confirmed Amaechi's acceptance of the vice-presidential role, solidifying the joint ticket.
