Pistons Poised for Comeback: Cunningham Expected to Return Against Bucks

Cade Cunningham, the standout player for the Detroit Pistons, is slated to make his much-anticipated return to the court on Wednesday night. He is expected to join his team against the Milwaukee Bucks, following an 11-game absence due to a collapsed left lung. The injury, which occurred during a game against the Washington Wizards on March 17, initially cast doubt on his return for the remainder of the regular season.
Despite the initial projections that Cunningham would miss the rest of the regular season and only be able to begin ramping up in the week leading up to the playoffs, scheduled to commence on April 18, sources indicate he is now ready to play in the final three regular season games. During Cunningham's time off the court, the Pistons demonstrated resilience, achieving an impressive 8-3 record and notably clinching home-court advantage in the Eastern Conference throughout the upcoming playoffs.
Cunningham's early return, while beneficial for team momentum, places him one game shy of the 65-game minimum required for consideration for post-season awards honors. However, a specific provision within the collective bargaining agreement, termed the "extraordinary circumstances challenge," could offer a pathway for him to qualify. This clause allows for situations like Cunningham's to be reviewed by an independent arbitrator, jointly selected by the NBA and the NBPA. Given the broad language of this provision, there is a distinct possibility that Cunningham could still have a chance to be considered for such accolades.
Throughout the current season, Cunningham has maintained impressive statistical averages, contributing significantly with 24.5 points, 9.9 assists, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game, over an average of 34.4 minutes on the court.
