Pirates Star Mbokazi's MLS Move Shakes Up Football: Salary Dreams & Transfer Fallout!

Orlando Pirates' young defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi is reportedly on the cusp of a significant transfer to Major League Soccer (MLS) side Chicago Fire. Widespread reports indicate that the clubs have agreed on a substantial transfer fee of R51 million for Mbokazi's services, with the move expected to be completed next month for him to join the MLS side next year. This impending departure has sparked considerable discussion among fans and analysts alike, highlighting a pivotal moment in the 20-year-old's burgeoning career.
The rumored move represents a major milestone for Mbokazi, whose career has seen rapid progression. In the year 2025 alone, the Hluhluwe-born defender made his first-team debut for Orlando Pirates and earned his first cap for the South African national team, Bafana Bafana. His potential transfer abroad to Chicago Fire would mark a third significant achievement in what has been a breakout period for the player.
Financially, the deal is set to bring a substantial windfall for Orlando Pirates. Beyond the initial R51 million transfer fee, the club also stands to benefit from FIFA's solidarity fee rules, which entitle development teams to a percentage of the transfer sum. Specifically, 5% of the R51 million (approximately R2.6 million) will be distributed among the clubs that Mbokazi trained with during his formative years, between the ages of 12 and 23. These include Langalibalele Academy, Makhasa FC, and Mthuba All Stars in KwaZulu-Natal, with the exact distribution depending on the duration he spent at each. Pirates themselves, having signed Mbokazi at 18, are also entitled to an additional 1% of the fee, independent of the main transfer sum.
Despite the financial benefits and career progression, concerns have been raised regarding whether a move to the MLS is the optimal step for Mbokazi. A primary apprehension revolves around his place in the Bafana Bafana squad. National team coach Hugo Broos has a noticeable pattern of overlooking players who ply their trade in America, with examples like Bongokuhle Hlongwane and former Kaizer Chiefs star Njabulo Blom, who missed the previous Afcon squad, illustrating this trend.
Furthermore, the perceived quality of the MLS compared to top European leagues is a point of contention. While the MLS is a respectable league, many believe that the pinnacle for a talented footballer like Mbokazi should be a move to Europe. Observers question why leagues in countries such as Romania, Austria, Portugal, Belgium, Sweden, France, the Netherlands, or even the English Championship were not considered, as they could offer a higher level of competition and exposure. The expectation was for Mbokazi to move to Europe after impressing for both Pirates and Bafana.
The timing of the move also raises questions, particularly with the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon. Having established himself in the qualifiers, Mbokazi is considered a strong candidate to start for Bafana Bafana in the tournament, which will be held in the Americas. This major international stage could have served as an invaluable platform to attract scouts from leading European clubs, potentially securing a move to an even stronger league and yielding a greater return for Orlando Pirates. However, there is always the counter-risk of a player failing to impress, which could diminish his market value.
Recent events have only intensified speculation. Mbokazi, known by the nickname "TLB," was conspicuously absent from Orlando Pirates' matchday squad against Chippa United, marking his first omission of the season. Head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou declined to comment on the situation when questioned. This absence prompted strong reactions from Pirates fans on social media, who voiced concerns about the team's defensive vulnerabilities without him. Comments from fans like @aey_dear, @OscarB_nice, @Future_billy, and @UnRuly20 highlighted the immediate impact of his absence and the general sentiment that Mbokazi has likely played his last game for the Sea Robbers, acknowledging the challenge of replacing him.
