Pirates Dominate Magesi, Match Sundowns Points in Thrilling Victory

Orlando Pirates commenced a new era at the newly renamed and sold-out Orlando Amstel Arena with a crucial opportunity to ascend the Betway Premiership standings. The Buccaneers, aiming for their first victory of 2026 after a goalless draw against Sekhukhune United, faced Magesi FC, who were at the bottom of the league after a loss to Sekhukhune in December before the AFCON 2025 break.
The starting lineups for the highly anticipated match were: Orlando Pirates: Chaine, Van Rooyen, Sibisi, Seema, Ndaba, Mbatha, Makhaula, Moremi, Appollis, Mofokeng, Mbuthuma. Substitutes included Buthelezi, Chabatsane, Hotto, Mariko, Nemtajela, Maswanganyi, Sebelebele, Msendami, and De Jong. Magesi FC: Chipezeze, Mokone, Makgoga, Mokone, Mashingo, Mtshali, Masegela, Matima, Raphadu, Vandala, Mosadi, with substitutes to be confirmed.
Coming into the match, Orlando Pirates were firmly in the league title discussion, having accumulated 29 points from 13 matches with nine wins, two draws, and only two losses. Under coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, the Sea Robbers had already secured silverware this season, lifting the MTN8 and Carling Knockout Cup in December. Their performance in both attack and defense had been stellar, with 18 goals scored and only five conceded. Magesi FC, however, were struggling significantly in the top flight, rooted in 16th place with just 11 points from 14 games, managing only two wins all season and enduring a five-match winless streak.
The match saw Orlando Pirates dominate from the onset, creating early chances. Just 15 seconds in, Oswin Appollis fired a shot that was blocked, followed by Tshepang Moremi missing a golden opportunity in the first minute. The relentless pressure paid off in the ninth minute when Appollis delivered a sharp pass to Relebohile Mofokeng, who then calmly squared the ball for Yanela Mbuthuma to score with a low finish, putting Pirates up 1-0. Pirates maintained control of possession and territory between the 10th and 25th minutes, though the final pass sometimes let them down. The second goal arrived just before halftime in the 40th minute, with Mofokeng, who later earned the Man of the Match award, picking up space outside the box and striking a low shot into the corner, leaving Elvis Chipezeze with no chance and sending Pirates into the break with a well-deserved 2-0 lead. Magesi showed a brief glimmer of life late in the half, forcing Sipho Chaine into a comfortable save during their first meaningful attack.
The second half mirrored the first, with Orlando Pirates continuing their waves of attack, confidently circulating the ball and forcing Chipezeze into a series of smart saves, while several shots narrowly missed the target. Substitutes Andre de Jong and Masindi Nemtajela both missed clear openings late in the game to extend the lead. Ultimately, Orlando Pirates secured the three points, moving to 32 points, level with Betway Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. Sundowns currently hold a two-goal advantage, but the Buccaneers possess a crucial game in hand. Winger Relebohile Mofokeng was the inspiration behind the 2-0 victory, providing an assist and scoring a goal. Fans were ecstatic, with tweets praising Mofokeng's performance, noting his brilliant pass to Mbuthuma and his return to form following an injury, having also scored the winner in the Carling Knockout Cup final last month.
