Peter Obi Says Tinubu Should Retire Ahead of 2027, Questions President's Capacity
Peter Obi, the NDC presidential candidate, has urged President Bola Tinubu to step aside before the 2027 election, citing his perceived incapacity to tackle Nigeria's deepening economic and security challenges. Obi highlighted alarming statistics on poverty and hunger, while also stressing the need for a leader with vision and commitment to address the nation's crises, linking insecurity to poverty and advocating for robust investment in education.
Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on President Bola Tinubu to step aside ahead of the 2027 general election, arguing that the President no longer has the capacity to effectively address Nigeria's economic and security challenges.
Speaking on Channels Television's Sunday Politics, Obi said Tinubu appears "tired" and is not the same leader who served as governor of Lagos State. He maintained that Nigeria requires energetic and visionary leadership to tackle its growing national problems.
Obi criticised the current state of the country, pointing to rising poverty, hunger, insecurity and governance challenges as evidence of the administration's shortcomings. Citing World Bank projections, he noted that a significant proportion of Nigerians are expected to live in poverty and urged political leaders to focus on issues affecting ordinary citizens, including education, healthcare and food security.
He also referenced reports warning that millions of Nigerians face the risk of hunger, insisting that the 2027 election should be centred on policies and national development rather than personalities.
While acknowledging recent praise from former US President Donald Trump regarding Tinubu's efforts to combat insecurity, Obi argued that the government's response remains inadequate given the scale of the crisis.
He stressed that addressing insecurity requires tackling its root causes, particularly poverty and inadequate investment in education. Obi added that, if elected president, he would adopt a hands-on approach to governance and prioritise the protection and welfare of Nigerians.
