An intriguing engraving within the desk reads, “Venerables writing box and pen holder, presented to Evelyn by your Mama, on the occasion of being appointed schoolmistress.” The term “Venerables” was a fond nickname the Dickens family used for the author himself. Another exquisite item from Dickens's estate available for bidding is a 32-piece silverware set. This collection, which originated from Gad’s Hill Place, the author’s country home, comprises 10 dessert spoons, 10 forks, 10 teaspoons, and two small salt spoons. Each utensil is uniquely adorned with Dickens’s initials, crafted in elegant cursive, and features a distinct fiddle-leaf pattern. Manufactured by Martin, Hall & Co. of Sheffield around 1860, the cutlery is described by RR Auction as being in conditions ranging from “very good” to “fine.” Following nine bids, the current price for this historical silverware set stands close to $6000.
