Orlando Pirates Soar to the Top! Dominant Win Propels Them Past Sundowns in Betway Premiership Showdown

Orlando Pirates have soared to the summit of the Betway Premiership standings after securing a convincing 2-0 victory over Durban City at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday. Goals from Evidence Makgopa and Patrick Maswanganyi on either side of halftime sealed the crucial three points for the Sea Robbers, placing them comfortably ahead of defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

This pivotal win sees Orlando Pirates leapfrog Mamelodi Sundowns, establishing a three-point lead with 28 points from 12 matches, compared to Sundowns' 25 points from the same number of games. This marks the first time this season that Pirates have claimed the top spot in the Betway Premiership, a significant turnaround following a challenging start to their campaign, which saw them lose their opening two league fixtures. However, under coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, the Buccaneers have since embarked on an impressive 10-match unbeaten run in the PSL, registering nine wins, netting 18 goals, and conceding only five across their 12 league encounters.

Coach Ouaddou implemented four tactical changes from their midweek 2-0 victory against Chippa United. Playmaker Patrick Maswanganyi was brought into the starting lineup in place of Sipho Mbule, while Nkosikhona Ndaba, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, and Evidence Makgopa replaced Deon Hotto, Lebone Seema, and Yanela Mbuthuma, respectively. The starting XI included Chaine, Sibisi, Mbokazi, Ndaba, Lebitso, Mbatha, Nemtajela, Maswanganyi, Moremi, Mofokeng, and Makgopa.

The opening goal came in the 23rd minute, courtesy of striker Evidence Makgopa, who netted his second league goal in the space of a week with a cool finish. The opportunity was created by an inch-perfect pass from winger Relebohile Mofokeng, who delivered from the left flank. Maswanganyi then secured the victory with a well-placed left-footed shot, following wonderful interchanges involving Mofokeng, Ndaba, and Appollis. Mofokeng later credited his team's collective effort for his performance, stating, "His [Makgopa] positioning was perfect, so I saw him and then I decided to pass him because he was in a better position than mine. I think, when he scores, we also score as a team."

Relebohile Mofokeng's exceptional performance earned him his first man-of-the-match award of the season. Despite previously struggling for form this season and facing uncertainty regarding his inclusion in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad, the 21-year-old attacker was recently named in Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana’s AFCON preliminary squad. His assist for Makgopa's goal and involvement in the second goal underscored his crucial contribution to the team's success.

This crucial away win also serves as Orlando Pirates' last Premiership fixture before the upcoming Carling Knockout Cup final against Marumo Gallants, providing a significant boost for Ouaddou’s men. With the Buccaneers no longer competing in the CAF Champions League, they are now able to dedicate their full focus to their league campaign, while rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs continue their continental commitments. The victory further solidifies their position, with Sekhukhune United and Chiefs trailing in the standings with 22 points each.
