Ola’s ‘Shakti’ Shakes Up Product Landscape: The Non-Vehicle Mystery Unveiled

Ola Electric, a company primarily known for its electric scooters, has officially diversified its product portfolio by launching its first non-vehicle product, named “Shakti.” Unveiled by Chairman and Managing Director Bhavish Aggarwal on October 16, the introduction of Shakti marks Ola’s significant entry into the burgeoning energy storage space segment, a move set to revolutionize personal energy consumption.
“Shakti” is an in-house developed, vertically integrated energy storage solution that Aggarwal described as intelligent, portable, and app-based. It leverages existing 4,680 Cell Technology, utilizing a Li-Ion NMC battery, and is designed to serve multiple purposes. According to Aggarwal, the product is a single solution for power backup, solar storage, voltage stabilization, and localized portability, requiring minimal maintenance and incurring no running costs.
This innovative product is available in three distinct variants, catering to different energy needs: 1.5kWh, 5.2kWh, and 9.1kWh. The introductory pricing for the smallest 1.5kWh variant starts at ₹39,999. The mid-range 5.2kWh variant is priced from ₹149,999, while the largest 9.1kWh variant begins at ₹199,999. Ola’s entry into this domain positions it within India’s substantial ₹1 lakh crore Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) market, with the company aiming not only to deploy batteries across India but also to establish a robust supply chain from the ground up.
The announcement of “Shakti” generated considerable excitement, particularly on social media. Users lauded the innovation, with comments such as, “Ola Shakti sounds super impressive! If the price is right it will be a game changer,” and “Wow! No need to change the wiring for the inverter — that’s really a great invention.” Another user highlighted its versatility, noting it is “a battery in three different variants to power the domestic and commercial usage including charging their scooters.” The product's teaser, featuring “Shakti (energy)” written in Hindi, underscored its core identity.
The launch, initially slated for October 16 on Diwali, was preponed. Bhavish Aggarwal had teased the product on October 14, hinting at its focus on energy storage and emphasizing a shift where power transitions from a mere utility to “Deep Tech - intelligent, portable, and personal!”
