Ogbomoso School Abductions Trigger Nationwide Outcry as Governments, Unions Demand Stronger Security Response

Concerns over rising attacks on schools in Nigeria have intensified following recent abductions of teachers and pupils in parts of Oyo State, sparking nationwide reactions from education stakeholders and government officials.
The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) staged a peaceful protest in Port Harcourt, condemning repeated assaults on educational institutions and demanding urgent action to protect students and staff. Protesters called on authorities to prioritize school security and end the growing wave of insecurity affecting learning environments.
In response, the Rivers State Government, through the Ministry of Education, assured residents that measures are being strengthened to secure schools across the state in collaboration with security agencies. Governor Siminalayi Fubara urged calm and reaffirmed that safeguarding educational institutions remains a priority.
Similarly, Governor Seyi Makinde described the abductions as a national tragedy and called for unity among stakeholders, stressing that all efforts are focused on securing the release of the victims while avoiding politicisation of the crisis.
At the federal level, the Presidency defended its response to the incident, stating that security agencies were immediately mobilised following the abductions. Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications Sunday Dare said operations included deployment of security forces, coordination with the Inspector General of Police, and activation of rescue efforts involving specialised units.
He also noted plans to deploy forest guards and strengthen security infrastructure in affected areas, while emphasising that ongoing rescue operations require operational discretion.
