Tragedy Strikes Rugby: Former Sale Sharks Player Hyron Andrews Dies After Hotel Fall

Former Sale Sharks and current Lions rugby player, Hyron Andrews, has tragically died at the age of 31 following a fall at his team's hotel in France. The South African Rugby Union confirmed the distressing news, stating that Andrews was with his Lions team ahead of their Investec Champions Cup match against La Rochelle when the incident occurred.

Andrews, a former lock, was a much-loved member of the Sale Sharks squad, where he made 45 appearances. He had initially joined Sale on a short-term deal but extended his stay through to the end of the 2025-26 campaign. Sale Sharks' director of rugby, Alex Sanderson, expressed profound sadness, remembering Andrews as a "brilliant guy and a brilliant team-mate" who was skilled on the field and charismatic off it. Sale Sharks plans to pay tribute to Andrews at their upcoming Champions Cup fixture against Glasgow Warriors.

Mark Alexander, president of SA Rugby, conveyed his shock and deepest sympathies, stating, "There are no words to adequately convey our shock and the depth of sympathy we feel for his wife Maighlin, and for his extended family, friends, team-mates and loved ones during this time of immense sorrow." He highlighted Andrews' respected contribution to the game and his positive impact on those around him.

Before his move to England in 2024, Andrews also played for the Durban-based Sharks. He had recently joined the Lions this season and had made two appearances for them in the United Rugby Championship. Lions Rugby chief executive Rudolf Straeuli shared the team's heartbreak, calling Andrews not only a gifted player but also a cherished member of their family. Straeuli extended condolences to Andrews' wife Maighlin and their young sons, Hendrix and Emerson, confirming that the Lions would play their game against La Rochelle "in honour of Hyron."

Tournament organisers have also confirmed that a moment of silence will be observed ahead of every Champions Cup and Challenge Cup match scheduled for the upcoming weekend, allowing the wider rugby community to mourn and remember Hyron Andrews.
