Off Campus Bombshell: Showrunner Reveals Reason for Mid-Season Shockwave!

Prime Video's new series, "Off Campus," has made a significant debut with its first season, drawing directly from Elle Kennedy's popular romance novel series of the same name. The show centers on four hockey players attending the fictional Briar University, with each book in the series dedicating its narrative to a different player. Season 1, now available for streaming, specifically adapts "The Deal," introducing viewers to Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli) and Hannah Wells (Ella Bright). Their burgeoning romance stems from an unconventional agreement: Garrett feigns dating Hannah to spark jealousy in her crush, while Hannah, in turn, tutors Garrett in philosophy. As anticipated, their initial arrangement quickly evolves beyond simple pretense.
Showrunner Louisa Levy provided insights into the series' adaptation, confirming plans to bring at least the first four books to screen, with potential for further seasons if Amazon grants approval. Levy expressed her excitement for the original author, Elle Kennedy, who is actively involved in the production as a producer, reviewing every episode and cut. Levy emphasized the importance of staying true to her creative vision when remixing beloved source material for television, acknowledging the daunting task of adapting a fan-favorite series while also externalizing internal monologues and translating scenes effectively for the visual medium.
A critical aspect of the adaptation discussed by Levy was the decision to faithfully include the past traumas experienced by both Hannah and Garrett—Hannah's assault and Garrett's abuse. Levy underscored that these elements constitute the very "soul" of Kennedy's books, believing the series would lose its unique depth without them. However, she stressed the responsible handling of these sensitive topics, choosing to never explicitly depict the traumas themselves. Instead, the focus remains squarely on the characters as survivors, exploring their journeys of healing and how they find recognition and solace in each other, seeing a hidden part of themselves mirrored in the other.
Levy also shed light on the strategic choice to introduce storylines from later books earlier in the series, particularly Dean and Allie's relationship. This decision was driven by the need for a compelling season finale that avoids leaving Hannah and Garrett on a cliffhanger, instead offering them a "happily ever after" within Season 1. By weaving in Allie and Dean's narrative—an organic choice given Hannah and Allie's friendship—the show lays groundwork for future seasons while providing a tantalizing "Oh no!" moment for viewers. Similarly, the early inclusion of Hunter, a character from the Briar U series and Dean's book, serves as another seed for potential future expansion.
Looking ahead, Levy confirmed that Season 2 has been greenlit, with the writers' room having concluded and scripts finalized, and production poised to commence soon. The vision extends beyond just the initial couples, aiming to continuously build out the ensemble cast. This approach ensures that characters like Hannah and Garrett don't simply fade into the background after their initial storyline, but rather continue to evolve within a broader world encompassing Allie, Dean, Logan, Tucker, and potentially new characters. Levy expressed a strong desire to eventually adapt the "Briar U" books, further expanding the universe for dedicated fans.
Reflecting on the production, Levy lauded the younger cast members, including Ella Bright and Belmont Cameli, for their professionalism and growth, highlighting their powerful on-screen chemistry. She revealed that the Season 1 ending was intentionally altered from a previously "sadder" version to incorporate Hunter, aiming to surprise audiences and generate anticipation for what comes next, thereby enhancing the show's "Oh no!" cliffhanger effect. The goal is to surprise and delight fans by mixing up the narrative in unexpected ways, ensuring continuous engagement.
