Obi's Political Gamble: ADC Switch Hangs in the Balance

The political landscape in Nigeria is currently abuzz with speculation regarding the potential defection of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). This proposed move, a significant development ahead of the crucial 2027 general elections, remains shrouded in uncertainty, sparking considerable debate among political observers and party stakeholders.
Tanko Yunusa, Peter Obi’s spokesman, addressed the ongoing queries by stating that Obi himself would make an announcement when he chooses to formally join the ADC. This statement underscores the cautious approach from Obi's camp regarding such a high-profile political decision. Meanwhile, the ADC has positioned itself as a formidable coalition party, strategically assembling key political figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Minister Rotimi Amaechi, with the explicit goal of challenging and unseating the incumbent President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential polls.
Adding another layer of complexity to the narrative, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, who was Peter Obi’s running mate during the last presidential election, recently reaffirmed Obi's continued membership with the Labour Party. Baba-Ahmed made this assertion at the Labour Party National Executive Council (NEC) meeting last week, even as the party faces its own internal challenges. This declaration by a close associate of Obi contrasts with the ADC's public stance regarding his potential entry.
Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, the national publicity secretary of the ADC, had previously indicated that Peter Obi, alongside other prominent leaders, had been granted a grace period. This allowance was made to enable them to finalize their respective activities with their former political affiliations before formally registering with the ADC. Specifically, Obi was reportedly permitted to conclude matters related to the recently held Anambra State governorship election. This suggests a structured and patient approach by the ADC to onboarding its high-profile recruits.
Indeed, some anticipated moves have already materialized, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, having formally registered with the ADC just last week. Their formal registration adds weight to the ADC's coalition efforts and highlights the seriousness of their intent for the 2027 elections.
Despite these developments, when Yunusa was pressed again yesterday about Obi’s expected move, his response remained consistent: "When he decides to move, he will say it by himself." This guarded communication from Obi’s spokesperson only fuels the speculation. Concurrently, sources within the Labour Party have conveyed to LEADERSHIP that the prospect of Obi joining the ADC is still "hazy," indicating internal uncertainty within his current party. The implications of Obi's potential shift for both the Labour Party, which would lose a significant figure, and the ADC, which would gain a popular leader, are a central point of discussion among analysts. While Obi’s camp maintains its reticence, the ADC’s Abdullahi continues to insist that Obi is an integral part of their burgeoning coalition and is expected to formally join once his pending electoral processes are fully concluded.
