Nottingham Forest Manager Sacked: Search Heats Up For New Boss

Nottingham Forest has officially parted ways with head coach Sean Dyche following a short spell in charge, marking him as the club's third managerial casualty of the current season. This decision comes as the Premier League club battles to avoid being drawn deeper into the relegation fight, necessitating a swift appointment of a replacement. Soccernet.ng reports that Nigerian internationals Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi will get a new coach at the Tricky Trees.
Dyche's departure was confirmed after a disappointing run of results, which left the club hovering just above the relegation zone in 17th place, three points above West Ham. He was appointed in October, following the earlier sackings of Nuno Espírito Santo in September – reportedly due to clashes with owner Evangelos Marinakis – and Ange Postecoglou, who was dismissed after only a month. Despite securing some decent initial results, Dyche's tenure lacked consistency. During his time at the helm, the Tricky Trees recorded six wins, four draws, and eight losses, with the final decision to part ways coming after a goalless draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The club’s board is keen to appoint a new head coach as soon as possible to steady their Premier League status amidst crucial upcoming fixtures.
Attention has quickly turned to Vítor Pereira, who has emerged as the leading candidate to take over at the City Ground. Reports indicate that Forest is already in talks with the former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager. Pereira is currently out of work after his spell at Wolves and is believed to be open to a return to English football. A significant factor in his candidacy is his previous working relationship with Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, established during their time together at Olympiacos.
Pereira's potential appointment carries implications for Nigerian international stars Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi, who are integral members of the Forest squad. If appointed, Pereira would inherit a team that includes both players, who could play central roles in the club’s survival push. Aina, a consistent performer at left-back, is considered a mainstay and is highly unlikely to lose his place in the side. However, Taiwo Awoniyi might face a tougher challenge. He has struggled with recurring injuries, leading to a loss of his starting position. With competition from Chris Wood, Igor Jesus, and Lorenzo Lucca, Awoniyi could find himself as a third-choice striker with limited minutes if he fails to impress the incoming manager. The Super Eagles stars will be hoping the new appointment favors their prospects.
Beyond his recent managerial stints, Vítor Pereira is also recognized in Nigerian football circles for his impact on Bright Osayi-Samuel’s career. The Portuguese coach was responsible for converting Osayi-Samuel from a winger into a marauding right-back in 2021. Osayi-Samuel, a Super Eagles star, initially resisted this positional change, stating, "It was Vítor Pereira, who was the coach at Wolves at the time, who wanted me to play as a wing-back. At first, I did not like it — I hated it — but I began to see improvements and realised I could actually become a better player. Then I got recognised for the national team, so I am grateful to him." Since making the switch permanently in 2022, Osayi-Samuel has established himself as one of Nigeria’s most reliable defenders, underscoring the long-term impact of Pereira's tactical decision.
