Nollywood Shaken: Industry Mourns Sudden Death of Beloved Actor Alexx Ekubo at 40

The Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, is in deep mourning following the death of its charismatic star, Alexx Ekubo, who passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026, at the age of 40. Industry sources confirmed that Ekubo had been quietly battling kidney cancer for some time, a health struggle that largely explained his prolonged absence from the public eye and social media since late 2024. Reports indicate that he had been ill for several months before his condition deteriorated; in one instance, he was reportedly rushed to the hospital on Monday, May 11, and placed on life support before his eventual passing.
Alexx Ekubo's passing has triggered an outpouring of grief and tributes from colleagues, celebrities, activists, and fans across social media platforms. Close friend and colleague Godwin Nnadiekwe shared a heartbreaking message on Instagram, revealing the gravity of the situation: "I'm struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me. To think you already prepared your Will--it's a heartbreak I can't quite describe. Rest well, my friend."
Other prominent figures also expressed their sorrow. Actress Funke Akindele posted a somber message, "Hmmmmmm. Rest in peace, Alex. I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best. May your kind soul rest in peace, Alex. 'Ore mi' like you fondly called me, I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together. Rest in Peace, Alex." Actor Bolanle Ninalowo, currently in the United States, shared his shock, praying for God to "heal your family and us all." Singer Peter Okoye simply wrote, "RIP," while broadcaster Oseni Rufai posted, "Rest well Alex."
Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore paid tribute on X, describing Ekubo as a "rare talent." He wrote, "My profound condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Nollywood star Alexx Ekubo, who I understand passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer. I never met him personally, but I still cannot forget a movie of his I watched on an Emirates flight from New York to Dubai en route to Nairobi. He was a rare talent whose presence lit up the screen effortlessly. May he rest in power." Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong also expressed condolences, noting, "Your contributions to the entertainment industry will not be forgotten in a hurry. You made significant strides and your memory will continue to inspire younger actors. My sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Alex. Life is indeed ephemeral."
Ekubo rose to prominence after finishing as the first runner-up in the 2010 Mr. Nigeria contest. He quickly became a household name, celebrated for his versatility, charisma, and screen presence. He won several awards for his performances and was recognized as a fashion icon in the African entertainment space. Fans fondly remember him for his "Johnny" persona in music videos and his many leading roles in films.
Throughout his successful career, Alexx Ekubo starred in numerous hit films and television productions, including "Afamefuna," "Power of 1," "A Sunday Affair," "Omo Ghetto: The Saga," "The Bling Lagosians," "Catch.er," "Zero Hour," "The First Lady," "Lagos Cougars," "Weekend Getaway," and "Conversations in Transit." He often portrayed charismatic or comedic characters, leaving a lasting impression on audiences.
His prolonged absence from social media, with his last post dating back to December 2024, had sparked concern among fans and colleagues, especially after reports emerged around the same time that his engagement had been called off. While he kept his health private, rumors of a serious medical condition began circulating in early 2025. As of press time, his family is yet to release a formal statement regarding burial arrangements.
