Nigeria Soars: New Direct Flights to Brazil Greenlit as Air Peace Gears Up for Lagos-São Paulo Route
Nigeria and Brazil have taken a significant step towards bolstering their bilateral relations with the signing of a Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA). This landmark agreement, which paves the way for direct flight connections between the two nations, was formalized by Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Brazil's Minister of Transport, Silvio Costa Filho. The signing took place in Brasília, in the esteemed presence of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, underscoring the high-level commitment to this strategic partnership.
The newly established framework is poised to unlock a wealth of opportunities across various sectors. Beyond merely facilitating air travel, it is expected to create fresh avenues for enhanced trade, stimulate tourism, attract increased investment, and foster deeper people-to-people exchanges. Officials anticipate that the agreement will lead to stronger economic integration, cultivate more robust cultural ties, and ultimately strengthen diplomatic cooperation between Nigeria and Brazil. This initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu's administration's commitment to expanding Nigeria's global partnerships and cultivating an environment conducive to international commerce and mobility.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva enthusiastically welcomed the partnership, reaffirming Brazil's readiness to expand its engagement with Nigeria not only in aviation but also in critical areas such as agriculture and infrastructure development. The groundwork for this agreement was laid during a prior visit by President Tinubu to Brazil, where he led a delegation that included senior cabinet members like the Minister of Finance, Mr. Olawale Edun; the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Onoh Ojukwu; and the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari. A key highlight of this visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that formalized the BASA, marking it as a crucial step in reinforcing ties between the two largest economies on their respective continents.
Further solidifying the agreement's practical implementation, Air Peace, a Nigerian carrier, has already secured approval to commence direct passenger flights between Lagos and São Paulo. Allen Onyema, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Air Peace, confirmed this development, describing the Lagos-São Paulo route as “long overdue” and a substantial boost for Nigeria's aviation sector. The airline plans to initiate the service with three weekly flights, with intentions to scale up frequency in response to demand and operational conditions. These inaugural direct flights by a Nigerian carrier are slated to begin by late November 2025, marking a historic direct air connection between the two countries.
