Nigeria rocked by Tiv Day Celebration Violence: President Tinubu Issues Stern Warning!

The 2025 Tiv Day celebration in Gboko, Benue State—an event traditionally honoring cultural heritage and unity—was overshadowed by political violence and rising tensions among key figures. President Bola Tinubu delivered a stern warning to the youth, urging them not to be used as political thugs and instead to channel their energy into profitable ventures that improve livelihoods. His remarks followed an incident in which unruly hoodlums disrupted the ceremony, attempting to prevent political adversaries from entering the venue.

Tensions escalated with the arrival of Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia at JS Tarka Stadium. Reports indicate that thugs obstructed his entry, provoking resistance from the governor’s supporters. The clash tragically resulted in one stabbing. Security personnel intervened promptly, de-escalating what could have been a far more catastrophic confrontation. The incident highlighted the growing political friction between prominent figures, including Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and former governor of Benue State. Akume’s seating arrangement, noticeably distant from Governor Alia, suggested a deepening impasse. During his address, Akume indirectly criticized Alia: “How can someone who wants to come back for a second term be fighting people? We know ourselves. We love our President, God bless Tinubu.”

In the aftermath, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, National Chairman of the APC, issued an apology and pledged to mediate between the conflicting factions. His aim is to unite the party and strengthen its position ahead of the 2027 general elections.

President Tinubu, whose message was conveyed by SGF Akume, also commended the Tiv people for their enduring cultural heritage and contributions to Nigeria’s unity and development. He emphasized that the Tiv nation’s traditions and communal spirit are vital pillars for national cohesion. Highlighting the significance of the Tiv Cultural Day—which began in 1977—he noted its role in promoting unity and preserving cultural identity, calling it a model for other ethnic groups. Tinubu further cited the contributions of Tiv nationals serving in key government positions as a testament to their dedication to national development.

The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting cultural events and fostering peaceful coexistence across Nigeria’s diverse communities, emphasizing that the protection of citizens during such celebrations remains a top priority.
