Nigeria: NDC Woos Obi, Kwankwaso Amid INEC Deadline Fault
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has publicly urged prominent politicians Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso to consider defecting from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and contest the forthcoming 2027 presidential election under the NDC banner. In a statement disseminated on X on Sunday, the party specified a narrow window of approximately two weeks for both politicians to make this crucial decision and secure the party's coveted presidential ticket. The NDC's message underscored the urgency, stating, "All we need right now. Just all we need. Two weeks to the deadline."
This invitation by the NDC comes amidst burgeoning speculation regarding a potential political alliance between Obi and Kwankwaso. Their respective supporters have already initiated the "OK Movement," an organized effort aimed at mobilizing broad backing for a joint presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle. Organizers of this movement have announced the establishment of national, zonal, and state-level structures to solidify their grassroots outreach.
The unfolding political developments are set against a backdrop of significant internal challenges plaguing the African Democratic Congress (ADC). A protracted leadership dispute continues to sow doubt regarding the party's readiness and coherence in the run-up to the next general elections. Illustrating this internal strife, the Supreme Court of Nigeria, on April 22, reserved judgment in a key appeal filed by a faction led by David Mark against a lawsuit initiated by a rival faction headed by Nafiu Bala.
Concurrently, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set May 30, 2026, as the definitive deadline for all political parties to submit their comprehensive membership registers and officially nominate candidates for the 2027 general elections. This timetable, however, has drawn considerable criticism from various opposition parties, including factions within the ADC, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). These parties have collectively called for an extension of the deadline for party primaries, advocating for it to be pushed back to the end of July. Their argument centers on the belief that the current schedule is overly restrictive, potentially hindering adequate preparation and democratic processes essential for the upcoming elections.
