Netflix's New True-Crime Sensation Dominates Globally After Explosive Debut

Netflix has cemented itself as the premier hub for true crime, much like Prime Video is considered the go-to for dad and teen content and Apple TV is the place to go for long-form sci-fi.

With several major true-crime hits already under its belt this year, Netflix has set a high bar for itself. Its latest offering has not only lived up to expectations, but it has also exceeded them.

It is currently the number-one movie worldwide across the platform, and according to Netflix's own data, has delivered a phenomenal viewership during its two weeks of release.

The movie revisits a relatively recent case that shocked the world and left a community in mourning.

The movie in question found a top 10 spot in 82 countries, and the number one spot in 27 countries.

It has spent two weeks in the top 10, jumping from the number three spot in the first week to the number one spot in its second week.

It defeated the holdover hits Swapped and Apex to claim the Netflix crown, which is no small feat considering the fact that both those hits have accumulated around 100 million views so far.

The true-crime movie comes on the heels of popular hits such as The Investigation of Lucy Letby, and Should I Marry a Murderer?

Next week, Netflix will release its latest genre offering, The Murder of Rachel Nickell, which will be accompanied by a narrative streaming series about the same case, titled The Witness.

Beyond true crime, other engaging content is making waves, such as a unique interactive quiz from Collider titled "Which Fictional Hospital Would You Work Best In?".

The streamer's latest true crime hit is The Crash, which has accumulated approximately 35 million views in two weeks.

The movie revisits the case of Mackenzie Shirilla, who, as a recent high school graduate, crashed her car at nearly 100 mph into the wall of a building, killing her boyfriend and his friend.

Investigators discovered that the crash may not have been an accident, and that Shirilla could have had a reason to kill her boyfriend.

The film includes interviews with Shirilla and her parents, and features investigators, prosecutors, and relatives of the deceased.

The Crashwas directed by Gareth Johnson, who previously directed the Netflix true-crime miniseries The Puppet Master: Hunting the Ultimate Conman, which was released in 2022.

The Crash has received positive reviews and is sitting at a 92% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

This quiz presents five iconic fictional hospitals—Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center ("The Pitt"), County General Hospital ("ER"), Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital ("Grey's Anatomy").

Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital ("House"), and Sacred Heart Hospital ("Scrubs")—each representing distinct approaches to televised medicine, ranging from brutal and chaotic to romantic, brilliant, and ridiculous.

The eight-question quiz guides participants through various scenarios to determine their ideal medical environment.

Questions explore one's first instinct when a critical patient arrives (e.g., staying present, triaging, trusting gut, asking overlooked questions, using humor), core motivations for entering medicine (e.g., being at the edge, helping people, intensity, solving puzzles, making a difference), and preferences for colleagues (e.g., competence and calm, trust and reliability, connection, intelligence, friendship).

Further questions delve into how one copes with patient loss (e.g., carrying the weight, processing and moving on, leaning on others, reviewing decisions, grieving imperfectly).

how colleagues would describe their work style (e.g., intense, steady, passionate, brilliant/difficult, warm/self-deprecating), and their stance on hospital protocol (e.g., floor not ceiling, respecting it, following instincts, breaking rules, mostly following with exceptions).

The quiz also looks at the personal cost of the job such as life outside work, relationships, idealism, and emotional resilience and what keeps people committed, like patients, colleagues, difficult cases, or passion for medicine.

At the end, participants are matched to a fictional hospital that fits their mindset.

“The Pitt” suits those who value realism in emergency medicine, while “ER” reflects steady, patient-focused professionals who believe in the system.

“Grey’s Anatomy” fits those who blend personal life with chaotic hospital work, and “House” aligns with problem-solvers who thrive on complex, high-stakes cases.

“Scrubs” represents those who use humor and human connection to cope with the challenges of medicine.
