Netflix's 'Dungeon Crawler Carl' Series Gears Up: Sci-Fi Legend & Top Showrunner Board Project

Peacock's anticipated live-action adaptation of Matt Dinniman's best-selling LitRPG novel series, "Dungeon Crawler Carl," is making significant strides in its development. The project, which received a series order to construct the World Dungeon in live-action, recently announced crucial creative additions and its first cast member, signaling rapid progress toward bringing the post-apocalyptic narrative to television.

A major development for the series is the appointment of Eric Heisserer as co-showrunner, joining the previously announced writer Chris Yost. Heisserer brings a wealth of experience in the sci-fi and fantasy genres, having earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on Denis Villeneuve's 2016 film, "Arrival." His recent small-screen endeavors include serving as showrunner, executive producer, and creator for Netflix's two-season adaptation of Leigh Bardugo's "Grishaverse" novels, "Shadow and Bone," and screenwriting Netflix's "Bird Box." Yost, who has been spearheading the creative process, will also serve as an executive producer alongside Heisserer.

The executive producing team for "Dungeon Crawler Carl" is formidable, including Seth MacFarlane, Erica Huggins, and Rachel Hargreaves-Heald from MacFarlane's Fuzzy Door banner. Author Matt Dinniman is also on board as a co-executive producer, ensuring a close connection to the source material. The adaptation is being produced by Universal Global Television.

Hays, celebrated for his 'thousand voices,' will portray the crucial role of Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk, the titular Coast Guard veteran Carl's stuck-up, self-centered, tiara-wearing talking cat companion. This announcement was made during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con featuring Dinniman and Yost, highlighting the importance of Hays's established connection to the fan-favorite character.
