Netflix Ditches Ambitious Fantasy Franchise Empire!

The year 2026 has been significant for Netflix, with substantial developments across both its movie and television departments. A major piece of news earlier in the year involved Netflix backing out of a potential acquisition of WB Discovery, which positioned Paramount as the sole prospective inheritor of the company, pending the deal's finalization.
Netflix has also rolled out several hit productions. In the movie realm, the sci-fi epic "War Machine," starring "Reacher" veteran Alan Ritchson, has been a standout success. Other popular films released this year include "The Rip," featuring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and "The Immortal Man," with Cillian Murphy and Rebecca Ferguson. On the television front, new seasons of popular series like "Bridgerton" and "One Piece" are currently in development, among many other projects.
However, not all projects have seen successful progression. Among the more intriguing long-term developments at Netflix were the planned dual movie and TV adaptations of Brian Jacques' acclaimed novel series, "Redwall." Netflix had initially announced its acquisition of the rights to adapt all 22 books into an animated feature film and a television show back in 2021, sparking considerable optimism among fans. Updates on these projects, however, have been scarce in the intervening years.
Unfortunately, recent reports confirm that both of Netflix's "Redwall" adaptations have been canceled and will not be moving forward. This news is a disappointment for fans who had hoped for modern adaptations of the beloved series. Currently, fans will need to rely on the existing 1999 TV adaptation and the 2000 movie adaptations, which are considered somewhat dated.
For context, "Redwall" centers on Matthias, a mouse residing at Redwall Abbey, a fortress that is constantly besieged by malevolent rats. Matthias eventually accepts his destiny to become the successor of a great mouse-warrior after being guided by the warrior's image. The planned Netflix projects never advanced beyond the development stage, meaning no casting announcements were ever made. It remains uncertain if interest in the "Redwall" project will be rekindled at Netflix in the future.
