NBA Star Kristaps Porzingis Suffers Scary Back Injury During Warriors Game

Golden State Warriors center Kristaps Porzingis exited Friday night's road loss against the Detroit Pistons due to lower back spasms. Postgame, Porzingis stated he would "probably" miss the upcoming Saturday night reunion game in Atlanta against the Hawks, the team that traded him in February, though he expressed a slim hope for improvement, noting his back felt "pretty stiff" at the time.
Porzingis first experienced his back tightening during the first quarter of the game. The issue exacerbated late in the second quarter following two consecutive physical plays involving Pistons big man Jalen Duren. On his final possession of the night, Porzingis leaped for an errant pass while being pushed from behind by Duren. Upon landing, he immediately clutched his lower back and requested to be taken out of the game. He was subsequently escorted slowly to the locker room by trainer Drew Yoder and was officially ruled out after halftime by the team.
The injury comes after Porzingis had been building significant momentum. He had recently overcome another bout of illness, participating in six of the Warriors' preceding eight games, with his minute limit increasing to 26. He had confidently communicated to reporters that he was feeling the best he had all season, delivering strong performances with 11, 17, 20, and 30 points in his last four outings. Just after Wednesday night's loss in Boston, he estimated he was operating at 60% of his normal capacity, anticipating that only a few more games were needed to achieve full rhythm.
However, this latest setback means Porzingis is expected to be sidelined in the short term, adding to a growing list of injury concerns for the 33-37 Warriors. The team's performance has also been struggling, highlighted by a season-high 27 turnovers in their recent loss to the Pistons and a dismal record of seven losses in their past eight games.
Despite the immediate discomfort, Porzingis conveyed optimism regarding the severity of his back issue. He reassured reporters that he did not believe the problem was serious, citing previous experiences with similar back troubles early in his career. He expressed confidence in his ability to manage the condition, stating, "I would say I'm pretty good at managing it, keeping my back strong." He acknowledged the current tightness, expecting it to worsen once he cooled down.
The trade that brought Porzingis to the Warriors involved Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield moving to the Hawks prior to the February 5 deadline. Interestingly, Kuminga has also faced his own health challenges since joining the Hawks, missing several games, including Friday night's loss to Houston, due to a bone bruise in his knee. Nevertheless, expectations are that Kuminga will be available to play against his former team, the Warriors, on Saturday night.
