Two major federal investigations have shaken the NBA, leading to the indictment and arrest of prominent figures, including Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and former NBA player and coach Damon Jones. These probes have uncovered complex schemes involving illegal sports betting and rigged high-stakes poker games linked to organized crime, allegedly generating millions in illicit profits.

The first investigation focuses on an illegal sports betting operation that exploited insider information about NBA games. Between December 2022 and March 2024, a network of conspirators allegedly placed fraudulent "under" prop bets on at least seven games involving teams such as the Charlotte Hornets, Orlando Magic, Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Toronto Raptors. Terry Rozier, while playing for the Charlotte Hornets, is accused of providing nonpublic game information and deliberately exiting a March 23, 2023, matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans under the guise of injury to benefit gamblers. After leaving the court just nine minutes into the game, Rozier allegedly enabled the collection of $100,000 in winnings, which was then used for subsequent wagers.

Damon Jones is also implicated, accused of selling confidential details regarding player availability to bettors. This included intelligence on a player resembling LeBron James for a February 2023 game, as well as information about the participation of stars such as Damian Lillard, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis for a January 2024 matchup. A co-conspirator whose description aligns with Chauncey Billups allegedly disclosed that the Trail Blazers were intentionally “tanking” certain games and that several players would miss a March 2023 contest. However, Billups’s attorney has categorically denied any gambling involvement. Sportsbooks are being treated as victims, as the wagers were based on fraudulent and nonpublic data.

This case also connects to Jontay Porter, formerly of the Toronto Raptors, who pleaded guilty to wire fraud after being coerced by co-conspirators to clear gambling debts. The NBA had previously investigated Rozier in 2023 over suspicious betting activity but, lacking law enforcement powers, found no rule violation at the time. The league now faces renewed scrutiny over its integrity protocols, especially amid an ongoing probe into Malik Beasley regarding similar allegations, though Beasley has not been indicted. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, who in 2014 supported the legalization of sports betting while emphasizing the need for game integrity, has since called for stronger federal oversight and urged sportsbooks to limit certain prop bets to prevent potential manipulation.

The second and overlapping investigation exposes a sophisticated high-stakes poker operation that allegedly defrauded wealthy participants of over $7 million since 2019. The scheme reportedly had the backing of four Italian-American Mafia families, the Gambino, Lucchese, Genovese, and Bonanno and used NBA figures as “face cards” to attract high-profile players to rigged games. Advanced technology, including X-ray-enabled tables, glasses revealing marked cards, and remote signaling systems, was allegedly employed to ensure that the conspirators maintained an unfair advantage. Participants, including Billups, Jones, and several dealers, allegedly shared in the victims’ losses, while the Mafia enforced debts through threats, extortion, and violence. Damon Jones, Eric Earnest, and Shane Hennen are charged in both federal investigations, underscoring the interconnection between the two criminal enterprises.

The legal repercussions are severe. Billups and Rozier face charges of wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy, each carrying potential sentences of up to 20 years in prison. Both have been released under strict conditions, including passport surrender and high-value bond requirements. In response, the NBA has acted swiftly, placing Billups and Rozier on indefinite leave. For the Trail Blazers, assistant coach Tiago Splitter has been named interim coach, while for the Miami Heat, Rozier’s $26.6 million guaranteed salary could be removed from the team’s cap if found guilty of violating league rules.

The NBA’s strict regulations prohibit any player, coach, or executive from betting on games or sharing confidential information, with the Commissioner empowered to suspend or permanently expel violators.
