NBA Champion Thunder Skip White House Visit

The reigning NBA champion, Oklahoma City Thunder, will not be visiting the White House during their scheduled road trip to the nation's capital this weekend, a team spokesperson confirmed on Friday.
Discussions had taken place between the team and the White House regarding a celebratory visit for the 2025 champions, but logistical "timing" constraints ultimately prevented it from materializing.
The Thunder issued a statement expressing their appreciation for the communication with the White House, while reiterating that the timing simply did not align for the visit.
Visiting the White House has been a deeply rooted tradition for NBA champions, with its origins tracing back to the Boston Celtics' trip in 1963.
Such celebrations are typically arranged to coincide with a regular-season game that brings the championship team to Washington D.C., allowing for convenient scheduling.
The Thunder are set to play against Washington on Saturday, making this weekend an ideal, albeit unfulfilled, window for such an event.
In recent years, several sports teams have opted to decline White House invitations, indicating a growing trend.
A notable instance was the NBA's Golden State Warriors, who declined their invitation in 2017.
Conversely, other teams have accepted similar honors, with last month's gold-medal-winning U.S. men's hockey team attending the State of the Union address following an invitation from President Donald Trump.
This visit also included an event with President Trump in the Oval Office and a lunch at the White House.
However, the gold-winning U.S. women's hockey team, also invited by President Trump to the State of the Union, chose not to attend, citing "the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments," highlighting that scheduling conflicts are a recurring factor in such decisions.
