Dr. Dominic Ayine, the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, has openly criticized the approach and expenditure associated with the construction of the National Cathedral. He firmly stated that the substantial funds allocated to this controversial project could have been more effectively utilized to complete several hospitals under the government's Agenda 111 programme. Dr. Ayine shared this assessment during the district launch of the Free Primary Health Care programme, held in the Bolga East Constituency, an event that was part of President John Dramani Mahama’s two-day “Resetting Ghana Tour” of the Upper East Region.
His critique was informed by a PwC report on the National Cathedral, which was presented to him recently. Dr. Ayine emphasized that the details outlined in the report solidified his view that the monies spent on the cathedral could have been channeled towards essential healthcare infrastructure. He explicitly remarked, "The monies spent on the National Cathedral from that Report could have been used to complete some Agenda 111 Hospitals," highlighting the potential for redirecting resources to pressing national needs.
Furthermore, Dr. Ayine questioned the very manner in which the religious facility project was pursued, suggesting that such an undertaking should have been handled with a different methodology. He articulated his strong disapproval with the statement: "You don’t build a house of God in the manner in which they went about it," underscoring his belief that the project's execution lacked appropriate consideration or approach.
