Hohoe Floods Unleash Devastation: Thousands Displaced as Relief Efforts Mount Amidst Growing Crisis

Residents of Hohoe Municipality in the Volta Region affected by severe flooding have received assurances of comprehensive government support, with relief efforts actively underway. The disaster struck after the River Dayi overflowed its banks, impacting approximately 5,000 people and submerging more than half of communities like Zongo, which is among the worst affected, forcing many residents to evacuate their homes.

Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, who also chairs the Regional Security Council, extended the government’s sympathy to the victims and pledged continued assistance during these difficult times. He confirmed that the government is collaborating closely with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other relevant agencies to deliver immediate aid. A team, including the Regional Director of NADMO and the Municipal Chief Executive, was promptly dispatched by the Regional Coordinating Council to assess the situation and provide initial relief. Furthermore, the Minister for Roads and Highways is mobilising additional relief items, expected to arrive in Hohoe for distribution to residents soon.

NADMO has already commenced the distribution of essential supplies to affected households. Pascal Agbagba, the Volta Regional Director of NADMO, reported that initial provisions include mattresses, various food items, mosquito nets, mosquito repellent, and cooking oil. These supplies are part of NADMO's immediate intervention as the organisation awaits further substantial relief items from its national office.

Mr. Agbagba also detailed the scale of the impact, noting that NADMO has identified over 4,000 affected households situated within approximately 400 houses across the impacted communities. He assured that efforts are being made to ensure every affected house receives some interim assistance, with plans for the distribution of additional relief items to be based on the number of affected households once new supplies arrive.

In a significant boost to relief efforts, NADMO's national office is preparing to dispatch more than 1,000 mattresses to the Hohoe Municipality. These additional supplies are intended to complement and bolster the relief items already distributed, further solidifying the support for residents grappling with the aftermath of the floods. Both the Volta Regional and National NADMO offices continue to work in concert, assessing needs and mobilising comprehensive assistance for the communities.
