Electoral Act Amendment Sparks Chaos in Nigerian National Assembly

The Nigerian House of Representatives faced heated debates and protests over the 2025 Electoral Act Amendment, particularly Clause 60(3) regulating the transmission of election results ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Initially, presiding officers were required to transmit results electronically to the IREV portal immediately after Form EC8A was signed, but escalating tensions prompted the House to rescind this version in favor of the Senate-approved dual method allowing electronic and manual reporting.

Under the new Clause 60(3), electronic transmission is mandatory, yet if communication fails, signed and stamped Form EC8A remains the primary source for collation and declaration of results, fueling controversy and protests among lawmakers and stakeholders.

Hon. Francis Waive, House Committee on Rules and Business Chairman, sponsored the motion to recommit the bill, citing technical inconsistencies and unintended consequences in the previous provisions that required further legislative clarification.

The amendment debate highlights ongoing tensions in Nigeria’s electoral framework, as lawmakers and citizens closely monitor changes that could significantly impact transparency, accountability, and trust in the voting process.
