Nation Mourns: Thousands Gather in Chaos to Bid Farewell to Raila Odinga

Kenya is in mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who passed away at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment in India. His passing has deeply impacted the nation and the East African region, prompting widespread tributes and a complex series of events surrounding his final farewell.
The repatriation of Odinga's remains from Mumbai to Nairobi was a solemn journey, undertaken by Kenya Airways flight KQ 203, which was symbolically renamed RA001 (Raila Amollo Odinga). The flight, departing Mumbai at 3:45 a.m., touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at 9:30 a.m. On board was a delegation of 30 Kenyan leaders and Odinga's family, including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who had been dispatched to India to facilitate the return. Captain Saviamaria Ondego and his First Officer piloted the flight, receiving a ceremonial water salute upon arrival at JKIA. The flight garnered significant global attention, becoming the most tracked airplane in the world on Flightradar24 with over 34,000 trackers. Kenya Airways, through a heartfelt statement, paid tribute to Odinga's enduring legacy and commended its crew, led by In-flight Performance Managers Kevin Otinde and Jason Mose, Flight Purser Mwaizangu Festo, and five cabin crew members, for their professionalism and empathy. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, also aboard, echoed this praise.
However, the emotional arrival at JKIA was not without incident, as crowds broke through barriers and stormed the runway, briefly paralyzing operations. This security breach, coupled with an unprecedented surge in demand for public viewing, led to a last-minute decision by government officials and the national funeral planning committee to relocate the public viewing from Parliament Buildings to Kasarani Stadium, citing safety concerns and fears of a stampede.
The public viewing at Kasarani Stadium on October 16, 2025, descended into chaos, marring what was intended to be a solemn national farewell. Thousands of mourners, many dressed in Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party colors and carrying Odinga's portraits, filled the stadium, singing hymns, chants, and liberation songs like “Baba While You Were Away.” Despite the initial peaceful gathering, the situation quickly deteriorated. Police fired tear gas canisters to disperse unruly crowds, resulting in clashes between mourners and security officers. Tragically, one person was killed, and several others sustained injuries, requiring emergency services. A disturbing scene unfolded when police recovered a body from the center of the stadium in full view of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen. Efforts by leaders present, including ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sherrif Nassir, and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, to calm the restless crowd proved futile. Mourners expressed deep anger and disappointment, with one stating, “We only came to view the body of our leader, but they served us bullets,” and another lamenting, “This is not what Baba would have wanted. They’ve stripped him of his final honours.” Despite the chaos, a timeline of events confirms that after hours of waiting, hundreds of Kenyans were given a chance to view the body after leaders, including President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and Mama Ida Odinga, had paid their respects. Adding to the bizarre turn of events, a swarm of bees invaded parts of the venue.
Tributes poured in from various quarters, highlighting Odinga's multifaceted legacy. The Pamoja Chan 2024 Local Organising Committees (LOCs) of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, led by Leodegar Tenga (Tanzania), Peter Ogwang (Uganda), and Nicholas Musonye (Kenya), extended their condolences, remembering Odinga as a political giant, a true sportsman, and a strong promoter of football in Africa. Tenga, a former Cecafa president, recalled Odinga’s long-standing passion for football and his support for CECAFA during his tenure. Musonye, a former Cecafa Secretary General, emphasized Odinga's role as a friend of football who believed in the sport’s power to unite people. His presence at several Chan 2024 matches, showing support for all three host nations, symbolized his commitment to regional unity. Personally, Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda described Odinga as a teacher, mentor, and father figure, emphasizing a deep, personal relationship built over three decades. In Mombasa, residents held street processions and lit candles, likening Odinga to a
