Nardwuar Honored: Iconic Interviewer Receives Canada’s Highest Recognition!

Nardwuar the Human Serviette, the distinctive Vancouver-based interviewer known for his flannel attire and eccentric personality, has been recognized with one of Canada’s most esteemed civilian accolades: the Order of Canada. On December 31, he was named among 80 new appointees to this prestigious honor. The 57-year-old, born John Ruskin, conveyed his profound humility and awe regarding the appointment in an Instagram video, stating, "So humbled that people thought I was worthy of this honour and nominated me." He further expressed, "I am in awe! Like I can’t even explain myself so I can’t imagine how people would explain me to the committee!"
Ruskin dedicated this significant recognition to his late mother, Olga Ruskin, acknowledging her profound influence. He credited her with teaching him extensively about history, the landscape of local independent media, and the critical importance of research. He conveyed his certainty that she would share his immense joy, concluding his message with his characteristic sign-off, "Doot doola doot doo…" His mother, Olga Ruskin, was a journalist who worked as a court reporter for the Toronto Star in the 1950s. She later went on to launch the Vancouver cable-access program, "Our Pioneers and Neighbours," in the 1970s, as detailed by CTV.
In addition to his iconic interview work, Nardwuar is also an accomplished musician, serving as the lead singer and keyboard player for The Evaporators, a band formed in 1986. Over the course of several decades, he has established himself as a relentlessly curious interviewer, celebrated for his deep dives into subjects' backgrounds and his thoughtful, often highly personalized, gifts to celebrities. This unique approach has garnered him widespread admiration, earning him fans among high-profile figures such as Snoop Dogg and Pharrell Williams.
Nardwuar’s extensive interview catalog includes hundreds of celebrity encounters, with recent conversations featuring prominent personalities like Sabrina Carpenter, Timothée Chalamet, Jack Antonoff, and Ice Spice. His career in media began on local college radio, and he later gained broader recognition when he joined MuchMusic’s airwaves in the late 1990s. During this period, he conducted memorable interviews with legendary acts such as Nirvana, Blur, and Snoop Dogg, consistently surprising them with his encyclopedic knowledge of their histories and obscure career details.
This year’s Order of Canada appointments also include other notable Canadian figures alongside Nardwuar. Among the honorees are children’s singer Raffi and country musician Terri Clark, as well as distinguished Supreme Court justices, scientists, authors, and athletes, according to CTV. Nardwuar's celebration was further marked by an Instagram post.
