Music World Mourns: Eurogliders Co-Founder Bernie Lynch Dies at 72

Bernie Lynch, the acclaimed frontman and co-founder of the iconic Australian pop group Eurogliders, has passed away at the age of 72 after a courageous battle with throat cancer. His death occurred on Thursday, March 12, as confirmed by vocalist Grace Knight, who was married to Lynch during the 1980s. Knight expressed profound grief, stating, "I am heartbroken and don’t know how to proceed without him." She fondly recalled their extensive journey together, having performed thousands of shows with Lynch always by her side, acknowledging it as a "wonderful, wonderful journey" and expressing pride in sharing it with him.

Lynch established Eurogliders in Perth, Western Australia, in 1980, a city then known as a fertile ground for alternative rock and post-punk music. The band achieved international recognition with their 1984 hit single “Heaven (Must Be There),” featured on their album *This Island*. The song soared to No. 2 on the ARIA Chart, made an impact on the Billboard charts, and remarkably continues to resonate over four decades later, even soundtracking a major real estate TV campaign in Australia. Music historian The Professor of Rock also notably identified "Heaven" as one of the most underrated and overlooked songs of its era.

Eurogliders continued to enjoy a string of domestic successes, including the 1985 track “We Will Together,” which featured Lynch on vocals, and the 1986 hit “Can’t Wait to See You.” The group eventually disbanded at the close of the 1980s but reunited on several occasions. These reunions included an album release and performances on the *Countdown Spectacular* nostalgia tour in the mid-2000s, and a later appearance at the Sunset Sounds beachside festival in 2023.

Bernie Lynch's health challenges began in 2024 when he was diagnosed with throat cancer and underwent what was initially a successful course of treatment. However, as Grace Knight explained, the illness tragically spread to his bones and other organs, leading to a rapid deterioration in his condition. Knight painted a vivid picture of Lynch’s character, describing him as "an incredibly kind and caring person and generous to a fault." She recounted his thoughtful gestures, such as ensuring the band was well-catered for with after-show refreshments, and his personal warmth, like bringing bags of food and taking over the kitchen when visiting her home. He was also remembered for his humor, intelligence, engaging personality, and his unwavering support for friends facing difficulties.

Beyond his personal qualities, Lynch's most enduring legacy lies in his music. Grace Knight emphasized, "Without Bernie’s songs, there would be no Eurogliders." She highlighted how his compositions, written as a young man, are still cherished and played on the radio 40 years later, continuing to bring joy to countless fans at their shows. His remarkable contribution to the cultural landscape of Australia through his songwriting is indeed a fantastic and lasting legacy.
