NBA Shocker: Giannis Antetokounmpo Sidelined with Knee Injury

Milwaukee Bucks superstar, Giannis Antetokounmpo, has been diagnosed with a hyperextended left knee and a bone bruise, an injury that will see him reevaluated in one week, sources close to the team reported on Tuesday.
Head coach Doc Rivers confirmed that initial imaging revealed no structural damage to Antetokounmpo's knee, offering a positive outlook on the severity of the injury, though a definitive timeline for his return remains undetermined.
"The good news was it was really a good image. There was no damage," Rivers stated before the Bucks' recent 123-116 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, emphasizing the relief over the lack of structural issues.
The injury occurred during the third quarter of Sunday's home game against the Indiana Pacers, when the 31-year-old forward landed awkwardly after executing a dunk.
Despite feeling he could continue playing, the Bucks' medical staff decided to hold him out for the remainder of the contest as a precautionary measure.
A source close to Antetokounmpo indicated that the two-time MVP does not perceive this setback as season-ending and fully intends to return to the court before the conclusion of the current season.
This latest injury comes at a critical juncture for the Milwaukee Bucks, who are struggling to secure a playoff berth.
With only 14 games left in their season, Tuesday marked their 68th game.
The team currently holds an11th-place standing in the Eastern Conference with a record of 28-40, trailing the Charlotte Hornets by 6½ games for the 10th and final play-in tournament spot.
Coach Rivers acknowledged the difficult decision ahead regarding Antetokounmpo's potential return, considering the team's precarious position.
"That's a good question," Rivers commented on how the team would balance the risk of playing their star with their dimming playoff hopes, adding, "Honestly, that's all I have. It's something we will talk about."
Antetokounmpo's 2024-2025 season has been plagued by injuries, marking a career-high 32 games missed, primarily due to various strains in his right calf.
The team's performance has significantly dipped in his absence, recording an 11-21 record without him compared to a 17-19 record when he is in the lineup.
Since his most recent return on March 2, Antetokounmpo participated in six games, where he averaged 25.7 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.7 assists over approximately 27 minutes per game.
Rivers had previously noted the challenges in managing Antetokounmpo's minutes, remarking, "He was trying to fit 35 minutes into 20," highlighting the tight constraints placed on his playing time.
Despite the interruptions, Antetokounmpo has maintained impressive averages of 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists in the 36 games he has played this season.
Compounding the Bucks' injury woes, center Myles Turner was also sidelined on Tuesday due to a right calf strain.
