Middle East on Edge: Pentagon Prepares for Weeks of Ground Operations in Escalating Iran Conflict

The escalating conflict with Iran has reached a critical juncture, marked by a direct and devastating missile strike on a vital US surveillance aircraft, significant American casualties, and a substantial military buildup across the Middle East.
This series of events has heightened regional tensions and raised serious concerns about potential widespread ground operations.
A critical US E-3 Sentry control system aircraft, essential for tracking drones, missiles, and hostile planes from hundreds of miles away, was destroyed in a missile strike at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia.
The attack on Friday, amid the ongoing Iran conflict, left at least five American troops seriously injured, with total injuries in the incident reaching up to fifteen.
Photographs from the base show the ravaged remains of the aircraft, specifically tail number 81-0005, assigned to the 552nd Air Control Wing out of Tinker Air Force Base.
Air Force Colonel John 'JV' Venable underscored the profound impact of this loss, noting the limited number of E-3s in the US fleet (only 16 remaining after production ended in 1992) and the impossibility of their immediate replacement.
The Pentagon is in the process of replacing these aircraft with Boeing E-7 Wedgetails, each costing $700 million.
The extensive damage, particularly concentrated in the rear section housing the rotating radar dome and sensitive surveillance electronics, marks the first known combat incident for this type of aircraft.
The destruction of the E-3 Sentry was part of a coordinated Iranian assault on Prince Sultan Air Base, which included six ballistic missiles and 29 drones.
This base, operated by the Royal Saudi Air Force but utilized by US forces, has been a repeated target since the conflict began.
Overall, the conflict has seen over 300 US troops wounded, with about 30 still sidelined and at least ten considered seriously injured.
Tragically, Army Sergeant Benjamin N Pennington, 26, died after being wounded in a March 1 attack on the same base.
He is among at least 13 US service members who have been killed in the conflict, with other incidents including a plane crash in Iraq and a drone attack on Port Shuaiba.
In response to the escalating situation, the US has dramatically increased its military presence in the Middle East, amassing approximately 50,000 troops, multiple warships, and two aircraft carriers, the largest deployment in over two decades.
The USS Tripoli, an amphibious assault ship carrying between 2,500 and 3,500 Marines, including elements from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, has arrived in the region.
Additional ships like the USS Boxer and another Marine Expeditionary Unit have also been deployed.
Furthermore, 10,000 troops from the 82nd Airborne Division are being prepared for deployment.
The Pentagon is reportedly preparing for weeks-long ground operations in Iran, described by officials as a contingency military option short of a full‑scale invasion, one that would involve a mix of special operations forces and conventional infantry troops for targeted raids and objectives rather than an outright occupation.
