Melania Trump's Epstein Comments Spark Controversy, Draw Survivor Reactions

Melania Trump recently issued a surprise public statement denying any relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, asserting she was not a victim and had no knowledge of his crimes. She explicitly stated that Epstein did not introduce her to her husband, Donald Trump, whom she met by chance at a New York City party in 1998. The First Lady called on Congress to hold public hearings with victims of Epstein’s abuse, stating, “I call on Congress to provide the women who have been victimized by Epstein with a public hearing specifically centered around the survivors.”
This statement prompted strong reactions from a group of 13 survivors of Epstein’s abuse, along with the brother and sister of the late Virginia Giuffre. In a joint statement, they accused Melania Trump of “shifting the burden” onto them, arguing that survivors have already shown extraordinary courage and that asking more of them now is a “deflection of responsibility not justice.” Melania Trump’s senior adviser, Marc Beckman, defended the timing of her remarks, stating, “She spoke out now because enough is enough. The lies must stop.”
Donald Trump, in an interview with The New York Times, said he was unaware of his wife's specific plans for the statement but supported her right to address questions regarding her connections to Epstein. While he might have handled it differently, he believed she had the right to speak her mind, noting that she found rumors linking her to Epstein or as one of his victims “very insulting.” Melania Trump further clarified that her initial encounter with Epstein was in 2000 at an event she attended with Donald, and at that time, she had no knowledge of his criminal undertakings. She also addressed an email she had sent to Ghislaine Maxwell, characterizing it as a polite, casual correspondence that did not indicate a close relationship.
In her detailed remarks, Melania Trump emphatically denied ever being friends with Epstein, being on his plane, visiting his private island, or being a witness in connection with his crimes. She stressed that her name has never appeared in court documents, depositions, victim statements, or FBI interviews related to the Epstein matter. She condemned the “fake images and statements” circulating on social media, attributing them to “mean-spirited and politically motivated individuals and entities” seeking to defame her reputation and gain financially or politically. She affirmed her legal team’s successful efforts in fighting these “unfounded and baseless lies.” Regarding her call for congressional hearings, she urged for sworn testimony to be permanently entered into the Congressional Record to uncover the truth, suggesting Epstein was “not alone” and noting that several prominent male executives resigned after the scandal became politicized.
In other significant news, Donald Trump attempted to redirect national attention from the Iran war and his wife’s statement by posting a graphic video of a woman’s killing in Florida, attributing it to an alleged illegal immigrant from Haiti, as part of his immigration crackdown agenda. The Trump administration also released new renderings of the “Arc de Trump,” a triumphal arch the president desires to install in Memorial Circle at the foot of the Arlington Memorial Bridge. Related to the escalating tensions with Iran, Donald Trump had earlier threatened to wipe out Iran’s civilization before announcing an uncertain two-week ceasefire. Yassamin Ansari, an Iranian American member of the US Congress, condemned Trump as an “evil human being” who “wants to be an emperor,” advocating for his removal from office over the war. Vice-President JD Vance warned Iran against trying to “play” the US in peace talks, while Tehran stated it would not participate until Israel ceased its bombing of Lebanon. Former US envoys also commented that the US-Israeli attack on Iran and Tehran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz have bolstered Iran’s resolve to resist pressure on its nuclear program.
In other developments, US inflation soared in March, with prices up 0.9% from the previous month and 3.3% over the year. California gubernatorial candidate Eric Swalwell is facing mounting pressure to withdraw from his race due to sexual assault and misconduct allegations. Concerns arose as a Trump administration appointee reportedly delayed the publication of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report highlighting the benefits of the Covid vaccine, suggesting potential efforts to undermine vaccine confidence. Pete Hegseth, Trump’s US defense secretary, is overseeing another strategic disaster in the Middle East. The Trump administration is also planning to establish a migrant “camp” for fleeing Cubans at the Guantánamo Bay military base should the island nation’s crisis worsen under US pressure. Meanwhile, former Vice-President Kamala Harris indicated she is “thinking about” running in the 2028 presidential election.
