Mbappe's Historic Poker Sinks Gutsy Greek Side in Champions League Masterclass
)
Real Madrid secured a dramatic 4-3 victory over Olympiacos in their UEFA Champions League group stage encounter, with Kylian Mbappe delivering a performance of historic proportions. Mbappe scored an extraordinary hat-trick in under seven minutes, followed by a fourth goal, ensuring Los Blancos triumphed despite a persistent challenge from the Greek side.
The match began with Olympiacos stunning the visiting Real Madrid squad, taking an early lead in the 8th minute. Portuguese midfielder Chiquinho skillfully maneuvered into space and unleashed a low finish past the Real Madrid goalkeeper, giving the hosts a dream start and putting immediate pressure on Madrid.
Real Madrid’s response was thunderous and swift, led by Mbappe. In the 22nd minute, he equalized with a calm finish into the bottom corner after a rapid break. Just two minutes later, he headed in his second goal from a precise cross delivered by Arda Guler. Mbappe completed his lightning-fast hat-trick in the 29th minute with another quick-fire finish, set up by Eduardo Camavinga, propelling Madrid to a 3-1 lead before halftime. This hat-trick, achieved in an astonishing 6 minutes and 42 seconds, stands as the second-fastest in Champions League history, only surpassed by Mohamed Salah’s 2022 treble, cementing Mbappe’s legacy.
After the break, Olympiacos refused to capitulate. They clawed a goal back through Mehdi Taremi in the 52nd minute, narrowing the deficit. However, Mbappe promptly extinguished any hopes of a comeback by scoring his fourth goal of the night in the 59th minute, restoring Madrid’s two-goal cushion. Even then, the Greek side continued to press, scoring deep into injury time when a scramble in the box allowed Ayoub El Kaabi to bundle the ball home, making it 4-3 and creating a frantic finish. Nevertheless, Real Madrid successfully held on to seal a hard-fought victory.
