Mass Cheating Rocks NECO 2025 SSCE Results Across 13 States

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has officially released the results of the 2025 Internal Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), marking it as one of the most successful examinations in recent times, with results delivered just 54 days after the final paper was written. Prof Dantani Wushishi, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of NECO, announced the results and detailed various aspects of the examination process and outcomes.
A total of 1,358,339 candidates sat for the June/July examination, comprising 680,292 males and 678,047 females. Out of these, 818,492 candidates, representing 60.26%, achieved five credits and above, including both Mathematics and English Language. Furthermore, a higher percentage of 84.26%, or 1,144,496 candidates, secured five credits and above regardless of their performance in Mathematics and English.
Addressing the issue of examination malpractice, Prof Wushishi disclosed that 38 schools across 13 states were implicated in "whole school cheating" during the examination. These schools have been invited to the Council for discussions, after which appropriate sanctions will be imposed. In addition to school-level infractions, nine supervisors were recommended for blacklisting. These supervisors, three each from Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and one each from Niger, Kano, and Osun states, faced recommendations for poor supervision, aiding and abetting malpractice, lateness, unruly behavior, assault, and insubordination.
On a positive note regarding integrity, NECO reported a significant reduction in individual examination malpractices. Only 3,878 candidates were involved in various forms of malpractice, a substantial decrease of 61.58% compared to the 10,094 cases recorded in 2024.
For candidates with special needs, 1,622 individuals participated. This included 586 males and 355 females with hearing impairments, and 111 males and 80 females with visual impairments. In terms of state performance for candidates scoring five credits and above including Mathematics and English, Kano State led with 68,159 candidates, followed by Lagos with 67,007, and Oyo State securing third place with 48,742 candidates.
Prof Wushishi also addressed disruptions caused by communal clashes in Lamorde Local Government Area of Adamawa State, which affected eight schools between July 7 and 25, 2025. These clashes disrupted examinations for 13 subjects and 29 papers, resulting in the non-release of results for the affected schools due to incompleteness. NECO has initiated discussions with the Adamawa State government to facilitate the conduct of examinations for these students.
Looking ahead, NECO announced that in view of a reviewed curriculum currently being implemented, the SSCE examination will be conducted on only 38 subjects. This measure is expected to reduce the waiting time for results, streamlining the post-examination process.
