Manchester's Violent Weekend: Stabbings Leave Three Fighting For Life

Greater Manchester was gripped by a weekend of severe knife crime, witnessing three separate stabbings in less than 48 hours, each leaving a man with life-threatening or potentially life-threatening injuries. Police have described these incidents as shocking acts of violence, though they believe each was a targeted attack with no wider risk to the public.
The series of brutal assaults began on Friday night, May 29, in Wigan. Officers were dispatched to Avon Road in the Norley Hall area at approximately 8:30 pm following reports of a knife attack. A man was found with serious stab wounds and was immediately rushed to hospital. His injuries were initially described as potentially life-threatening, though by Saturday lunchtime, his condition had stabilized. A police cordon was established and maintained throughout the night, with forensic teams meticulously scouring the area for evidence, including an item of clothing found on the ground, on Saturday morning. Detective Inspector Jonathan Waywell, from Greater Manchester Police's Wigan CID, characterized the incident as a 'shocking act of violence' and a 'targeted attack.' As of this time, no arrests have been made, and investigations are actively ongoing.
The second major incident unfolded on Saturday night, May 30, in the Strangeways area, near Manchester city centre. Police received reports of a stabbing on Great Ducie Street at 11:32 pm and arrived at the scene just seven minutes later. They discovered a man in his 30s suffering from stab wounds to his back. The victim was transported to Manchester Royal Infirmary with potentially life-threatening injuries and remains in a serious condition. A swift police response led to the arrest of a 20-year-old man, who was found on nearby Barker Street at 11:49 pm, on suspicion of Section 18 assault (causing grievous bodily harm with intent). However, the suspect has since been released on bail pending further enquiries. Chief Inspector Peter Crowe, from GMP's City of Manchester division, commented on the 'extremely violent attack,' stating that detectives are working diligently to ascertain the motive but reiterated that there is not believed to be a wider threat to the community.
The third and final reported stabbing of the weekend occurred on Sunday afternoon, May 31, in Gorton. Emergency services were called to Trust Road at around 3:50 pm after reports that a 23-year-old man had sustained multiple injuries from a suspected stabbing. The victim was rushed to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries and continues to receive treatment. Authorities believe the suspects involved in this incident fled the scene on an electric bike. Detective Inspector Mark Hodgson, from GMP’s City of Manchester district, highlighted the gravity of the situation, noting it 'could have easily resulted in much more serious consequences.' He affirmed that this was also considered a targeted attack, posing no risk to the wider public, and that enquiries are progressing rapidly to locate and apprehend those responsible.
Across all three incidents, Greater Manchester Police emphasized the severe stance taken against knife crime, with Detective Inspector Waywell from Wigan CID stating, 'Knife crime is taken extremely seriously and will not be tolerated. Incidents like this have devastating consequences for victims, families, and communities.' Investigations into all three stabbings are continuing, with police urging anyone who possesses information, relevant CCTV, dashcam, or doorbell footage to come forward. Witnesses can contact GMP by calling 101, using the LiveChat tool online, or by reaching out to the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
